Every time a blemish mark appeared on my skin, all I’d think of was those over-the-counter products that are found in every chemist store. They promise blemish-free skin in weeks but I figured that they promise two more things— they are 100 percent chemical-laden and they make your skin dry, irritated and flaky. That’s when I decided to say no to them and welcome natural home remedies. Home remedies are a much safer option. See, the skin on our face is very sensitive and it needs to be treated with love and care.

One word that describes blemishes best is that they are nothing but “imperfections” on our skin. I mean to say— the dark spots, the whiteheads, the blackheads, the scars, the pigmentation marks, the acne and even the age spots— they are all just imperfections. They mainly surface on our skin because of stress or clogged pores. If this happens on the upper layers of the epidermis, it results in blackheads and whiteheads (1). If it happens within the skin, then it results in what we hate— the acne. And all these leave our skin inflamed which gradually turns into blemishes on our face.

Certain things never fix themselves up and blemishes are one among them. Treating them the right way is the only way you can prevent them from resurfacing. And I strongly believe that apart from treating them externally with creams, we need to internally promote a healthier skin (2). And, mind you, blemishes aren’t just a teenager’s nightmare! It affects people of all age groups.

So after I gathered a potful of knowledge from my grandmother, my mother, and of course, the cyberspace, I tried out these 5 easy-peasy home remedies. It definitely worked for me. And I’m sharing them with you.

1. Lemon Juice

This is easily available. I squeezed out some lemon juice on a cotton pad and applied it onto my skin. What I noticed is that lemons have high citric content, therefore, you shouldn’t leave it on your skin for too long (it can cause redness). Just 10-15 minutes is ideal. Also, you can mix a teaspoon of lemon juice with some honey in water and drink to get a healthy glowing skin.

Lemons exfoliate skin, remove all the excess oil, and kill the bacteria. With multiple uses, it will lighten the blemishes (3).

Tomato juice or even just the pulp of it is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants that will boost a blemish-free skin. Gently massage tomato pulp on your face and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Wash it off with some cold water. It shrinks your large pores, cures acne and deals with your sun tan as well (4). Include fresh tomatoes in your diet for a fresher looking skin.

This turned out to be my favorite among all the remedies. It’s so soothing.The mild fragrance just calms my mind in a jiffy. And it’s something that we Indians swear by since time immemorial (5). Take some sandalwood powder and rose water in equal measures and make a smooth paste. Apply it over your blemished skin and wait till it dries off and then rinse with cold water. Doing this on a regular basis will only take you closer to that perfect and flawless skin that you’ve been dreaming about.

They worked like magic and cleared the dark spots on my skin. You just need to grind them into a fine paste and apply it over the skin. After a good 20 minutes, wash it off with cold water. It has helped in curing my acne (6).

Of course, you could eat the two ingredients for a glow from within. But for your blemishes, make the following paste:
Add one banana and cucumber in the grinder along with some honey, lemon juice, and few drops of olive oil. Make a fine paste. Apply it on your face and keep it for 20-30 minutes. Wash it off with some cold water. It’s a yummy pack, do it as regularly as you like. Soon, you’ll have a blemish-free skin.
