If the thought of fitness retreats intimidates you, Body Camp Mallorca – the new and slightly more accessible sister to the celebrity favourite, Body Camp Ibiza – should be your first port of call. The retreat offers a total mind and body revamp with a massive dose of fun.
We were hoping for a glimpse of an ab or at least marginally raised fitness levels but to our total surprise, we came away from a week at Body Camp Mallorca with a lot more than that – a whole new mind game and a reshaped outlook on what healthy really means. Here, Grace Barnes shares her highlights from the trip of a lifetime…
On arrival, we were welcomed with a huge and comforting hug from Gee, one of the camp assistants, also a trained PT and nutritionist, which immediately put me at ease.
As well as the welcoming staff, the property itself is a luxurious haunt that feels like home. An aesthetically-pleasing Spanish house with original features and super cool white rooms and chic interior touches, the camp feels like home in an instant. The camp offers just the right level of luxury after an intense day of training.
The focus here is fitness, with up to 4 hours training on some days – active “recovery days” look like a 10km hike in the Mallorcan mountains or a bike ride to the local village – and it’s fitness that you can’t even feel (in a good way!). Brilliant trainer Anthony Rich makes every session fun, music-filled – you won’t hear the same track twice – and challenging for body and mind. From circuits, to fartlek training, to boxing drills and gym-based exercises, this place proves that variety is the spice of life.
Every session feels different and it’s always themed, usually with a dash of fancy dress. Of course, the week featured the dreaded bleep test to measure your own personal fitness improvement over the week. We repeated the test at then end of our stay to assess our gains and we had stepped up two whole stages by the end of the week despite being completely exhausted.
Of course so many guests are there to get lean, increase their fitness and feel a bit more confident on the gym floor but that is not what this retreat is really all about. With daily sessions on mindfulness, breaking habits and understanding nutrition, I came away with an entirely new mindset and left full of self-respect.
What makes this place really different is the absence of weighing scales; it is all about body positivity and achieving whatever is important to you. When it comes to mealtimes, you can even choose which food lane you sit in – fat loss, maintain or build. We never went hungry and there wasn’t a juice diet in sight.
On the topic of food… it was a total highlight. The all plant-based menus carefully designed by the brilliant chef, Ben Whale, were beyond inspirational and just damn delicious. We gorged on three meals and two snacks – my favourite being the totally indulgent plant powered chocolate brownies, which were packed with plant-based nutrients so I was never hungry.
Post-dinner activities keep you very well distracted. My absolute favourite was the music quiz night where we found ourselves dancing around to ABBA (completely booze-free!!).
They are really clever at Body Camp Mallorca, secretly teaching us how to take our new habits home. We were made accountable for our own fitness with add-ons to the daily training. Challenged with completing extra exercise “laps”, you could really push yourself and easily see how to take the new-you home, which is where the hard work really begins; fitting everything you learn into ‘normal’ life.
There were so many little added extras that made the retreat stand out. Flavoured waters to refill our re-usable bottles were aplenty, which meant I was downing three litres of water a day with no qualms, motivational message cards at breakfast put a positive spin on each day, crystal healing kept us zen and, of course, the camp mascots, Dude and Sailor, were always on hand to dish out hugs.
Body Camp really is for everyone of all fitness levels, all life stages and all personality types. I met some seriously inspirational, tough women (and men) during our stay and it was a total dream to be surrounded by such a gorgeous bunch of retreaters. Wellness never felt so good.
