You Don’t Want To Miss HGTV’s White House Christmas 2017 Special

HGTV is constantly bringing its viewers what we love most: namely, room-by-room tours of the most over-the-top seasonally decorated houses. And for the 15th year in a row, the network is giving us the White House in all of its Christmas glory, with a sneak peak at the first lady’s chosen decor hosted by Alison Victoria.

Set your DVR (or put in a blank tape if you’re still living that trendy old-school life) for December 10 at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT to hold onto your tour of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. From what we can tell, it looks like you’re going to want to watch it over and over again.

It is tradition to choose a theme around which the first house is to be decorated for the season, and this year’s theme is “Time-Honored Traditions.” HGTV describes it as “celebrating both established customs at America’s first residence – beginning with the first White House Christmas party hosted in 1800 by President John Adams and First Lady Abigail – and holiday traditions of American families everywhere, from holiday dinners to reading Christmas stories to loved ones to watching holiday movies together.”

The network reports that this year marks the 50th year that the White House crèche will be displayed in the East Room. It has been passed down through 10 administrations, starting with that of Lyndon B. Johnson, but was almost ousted in 2009 when the Obamas wanted to make their home a little less religious and a little more inclusive. They made a point of calling it the holiday season rather than Christmas outright, but whichever way you slice it, the house has always been dripping with festive decor this time of year.

Another longstanding tradition: the gingerbread White House. On the special, we’ll get to watch Victoria help out executive pastry chef Susan Morrison and the rest of the kitchen staff with prep and display.

From the official White House Christmas tree in the Blue Room, to the aptly decorated evergreens in the Red Room, Green Room, and East Colonnade, we’ll be feeling all the Christmas feels come Monday morning.
