Why you should get a ‘blunt lob’ right now

The reason it’s so uniformly appealing is, it makes a drastic enough cut for those with long hair looking to go shorter, and it’s slinky enough to look like you’ve simply been too busy to go for a cut, if you’re growing out your bob.

Either way, it makes for a cool, slightly more rebellious shape.

Fancy trying out a short hairstyle but intimidated by the prospect of a bob? We get it. The short style is a somewhat drastic look to plump for if you’ve embraced long hair all your life. That’s where the ‘lob’ comes in – and the clue is very much in the name. The long bob sits somewhere in between a bob and long lengths and hairdressers came up with the style to satisfy those looking for a change without erring too far from their comfort zone.

Universally flattering on all face shapes and hair types, it’s the chic cut beloved by many for its face framing abilities as well as its minimal maintenance upkeep and versatility (it’s long enough to easily pin into an updo).

Explaining why the style is so flattering, colourist, session stylist and owner of Baxter South, Jack Baxter, said: “The ‘lob’ is an extended bob that sits just above the shoulders. It’s neither short or long and gives the benefits of both. Sitting just below the jawline, the lob encourages the eye to fall on the ends of the hair rather than your jaw line meaning it is super flattering. The blunt ends give a modern texture that is interesting and appealing to the eye.

“This style suits most hair types as it can be styled super straight and sleek or in tandem with your hairs natural curl/texture. The lob works for almost all face shapes universally. As it’s a midi length it is likely to work for you. Ask your hair stylist for advice on your bespoke lob depending on your face shape and hair type. ”

So now you know just how flattering a lob is, why not try a contemporary take on the look? The blunt lob is currently trending in salons as people plump for an edgier take on the trend.

“For a contemporary take on the lob you want to ask your hair stylist for a middle parting, blunt ends with a slight choppy layer through the ends,” explained Jack.

The best part about this style, says Jack, is that even though you have a middle parting cut into your hair, you have the option to style this to either side and create a deep side parting for a cool girl finish.

“The beauty of this style is that it’s low maintenance nature. Because it is midi length it won’t be as awkward for you to grow out. As it grows, your style will gradually move past shoulder length and still look presentable whilst you wait on your next salon visit. ”

Jack says the key to this trend is the blunt ends. “This may sound attainable to do at home but avoid the scissors and book an appointment with your hair stylist to keep your look fresh. Lots of work goes into those blunt ends and that’s what makes this style so gorgeous. Having your hair cut between every 6-8 weeks works for the lob. ”
