The Golden Globes is arguably one of the world’s most well-known red carpet events, founded in 1944, it has promises audiences an evening of glitz, glamour and a star-studded guest list to rival The Met Gala.
And although the bash itself might only last one night, celebrities, producers and advertisers alike leverage the priceless coverage to help boost movie sales, catapult careers and create new trail-blazing connections.
But 2022’s Golden Globes ceremony was a little a different. In fact, Hollywood boycotted the once star-studded ceremony last year. NBC didn’t air the ceremony, and the event was held in private with hardly any information released in the run-up.
Why were the 2022 Golden Globes cancelled?
A damning exposé of The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) found that there were no Black members in the 87-strong voting body, and that relatively few members worked full-time for notable foreign publications. Other ethical failings included claims of inappropriate “freebies” from studios and PR agencies.
The newspaper’s investigation also alleged the group often accepted «freebies» from studios and PR agencies who were campaigning for nominations, along with other ethical failings.
So, in March 2021 more than 100 public relations firms announced they would withdraw cooperation with the Golden Globes, and a series of high-profile Hollywood figures, including Tom Cruise and Scarlett Johansson, spoke outwardly about their disapproval.
Johansson, who, at the time had been nominated for five Golden Globes herself, urged others in the film industry to boycott the organisation unless it makes significant internal changes.
The actor recalled facing «sexist questions and remarks by certain HFPA members that bordered on sexual harassment».
She released a statement, citing: “Unless there is necessary fundamental reform within the organization, I believe it is time that we take a step back from the HFPA and focus on the importance and strength of unity within our unions and the industry as a whole. ”
As a result, the HFPA announced a series of reforms, including diversifying members and a ban on promotional “freebies”.
Who is expected to attend the Golden Globes 2023?
The question is, have the Golden Globes redeemed themselves, and which Hollywood stars will continue to boycott the event, and who will turn up to 2023’s ceremony held on 10th January?
Well, we know that Quentin Tarantino, Billy Porter, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ana de Armas will definitely be in attendance because they were announced as presenters on 3rd January. Jamie Lee Curtis is also nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ for her t role in Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Ana de Armas is nominated for ‘Best Leading Drama Actress’ for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in Blonde.
Jerrod Carmichael will also be in attendance as he is hosting the event.
Additionally, a recent tweet from the official Golden Globes Twitter account suggested Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Selena Gomez, MJ Rodriguez, Jennifer Coolidge, Jenna Ortega and Rihanna will also be in attendance.
