You ever look at a Brinks truck and think about what it’s got in there?
How much cash is in that thing, could I break in if I tried, and is there some insanely rare item hidden behind those metal doors?
Here are a few things you might not have known about armoured trucks.
Purpose
Unlike things like tanks, an armoured truck is not built to provide any sort of offense. Rather, the trucks are meant to keep people and items safe enough for them to make a getaway from a potentially dangerous situation.
Most of the truck is plated deeply with steel and is set at a specific angle that allows for the resistance of high-powered bullets. The tires are also protected with internal liners that make it incredibly hard to ruin them.
Weight
When full, an armoured truck can weigh up to 55,000 pounds. That is as much as a CH-47D Chinook helicopter.
History
Armoured trucks have roots as far back as the 1920’s. When the Binks company were after a group of lawless thugs who were known for destroying things like homes and vehicles, they decided that it was time to armour up.
They wound up finding old retired school buses to start testing out armoured vehicles. Brinks started transforming these buses into the first ever armoured trucks by barring their windows and adding steel plates to reinforce them. They then used these trucks to start hunting down these hooligans.
Armoured trucks are used by companies to transport incredibly valuable items such as jewelry and art. Notable jewelry stores such as Tiffany Co and Rogers and Hollands are known to use armoured trucks to bring in their inventory. These trucks are perfect for this because not only do they keep the “goods” out of sight, but they are incredibly protected and make the transportation of these goods a hell of a lot safer.
The odds of dying in a car accident is 1/5,000. The odds of dying in an accident when you’re in an armoured vehicle drops to 1/30,000.
The majority of attacks on armoured vehicles are on the glass. There has been a slow and steady incline of armoured vehicle sales due to higher fears of terrorist attacks and kidnappings. Wealthy business owners and governments are the most frequent purchasers of these things.
There are over 100,000 armoured vehicles currently in use worldwide. A standard armoured vehicle costs around $120,000. Some, however, can cost upwards of $3,000,000.
