Was 1994 the best year for movies? There’s a good case for it…

Every year, Hollywood says that it’s the best year for movies, and we’re just supposed to agree with them. Well, I kinda don’t. To me, 1994 was one of the best years ever for movies.

The stuff that came out that year, is still solid today. You can still throw them on, and get lost in some 90’s nostalgia and miss the simpler times.

These movies are a time machine to better days.

The Shawshank Redemption

October 14, 1994
If there’s a more inspirational and moving movie out there, I’ve yet to see it.

Pulp Fiction

October 14, 1994
This non-linear film singlehandedly revitalized the career of John Travolta, and established Samuel L. Jackson as a badass Motherfucker.

Forest Gump

July 6, 1994
No one expected this film to be as amazing as it was, but I don’t think Tom Hanks has been any better than he was in this role.

The Lion King

June 24, 1994
Easily one of the best Disney films of all time, it also has one of the most tragic deaths next to Bambi’s mom. I still get choked up watching it.

Leon: The Professional

November 18, 1994
This Luc Besson classic is still a fantastic watch 24 years later, and caused me to have a schoolboy crush on Natalie Portman for the longest time. Frankly, I still do.

Interview With the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles

November 11, 1994
This film based on the Anne Rice novel is a lot better than you remember. It’s dark, dramatic and subtly beautiful. It holds up incredibly well.

The Crow

May 13, 1994
This film is always going to be in my top ten. Brandon Lee is superb in the role and it’s delightfully dark, gothic and fucking beautiful.

Speed

June 10, 1994
Keeping a bus driving over 50mph has never been more exciting than in this movie. Plus you’ve got a Keanu at his most heroic, Sandra Bullock is always adorable and Dennis Hopper just kills it.

Clerks

November 9, 1994
A testament to guerilla filmmaking, this dark comedy is Kevin Smith’s best film. The fact that it’s just about two dudes, who hate work, talk movies and play hockey on the store roof, still speaks to me on a spiritual level.

True Lies

July 15, 1994
Probably not the best image to use, but c’mon. . Jamie Lee Curtis was smokin’ in this film. Plus the rest of the movie is pure 90’s action at its most excessive.

Dumb and Dumber

December 16, 1994
The cross country adventures of these two idiots never fails to put a smile on my face. If this is on some random channel, you can be sure I’m gonna watch it to the end.

The Mask

July 29, 1994
This was one of my first introductions to the fucking insanity that is Jim Carrey. It’s still hilarious, and Cameron Diaz has never been hotter.

Natural Born Killers

August 26, 1994
This movie would probably not be made today, due to the subject matter. But the concept of violence and mass media being the reason why two psychos do their thing, it’s chilling.

Reality Bites

February 18, 1994
If there was a film that captured what life was like for gen X in the 90’s, it was this one. Shit was rough.

Junior

November 23, 1994
Teaming up Danny DeVito and Arnold is always a good idea, especially when one of them gets pregnant.

Clear and Present Danger

August 3, 1994
This final instalment with Harrison Ford as CIA Analyst turned badass is the 90’s political climate in a nutshell.

D2: The Mighty Ducks

March 25, 1994
Hands down, this is one of my favourite trilogies of all times. Call them cheesy and whatnot, I don’t care. These are pure nostalgia in my noggin.

Timecop

September 16, 1994
This isn’t a great film, by any stretch of the imagination, but it captures the insanity of the decade and of JCVD.
