Vintage fringes had a *serious* moment at the Met Gala last night

Most notably, when it came tohair– and what encompasses old-school glam quite like the humble fringe? And while there were a fewfringesthat made their way onto the red carpet (Megan Fox’s blunt, cropped fringe gets an honourable mention), if you ask us, it wasBillie EilishandKristen Stewartwho stole the fringe show.

Considering the theme of last night’s Met Gala (In America: A Lexicon of Fashion), it’s not surprising that we saw a whole bunch of vintage and old Hollywood inspired looks. And while the fashion was no doubt the main event, the beauty looks served some serious vintage inspo, too.

While Billie showcased an evidently Marilyn Monroe-inspired, blown-out bob, complete with a side-sweep, Kristen Stewart went for a Rosie the Riveter-esque rockabilly tuck. And actually, we think this is fringe inspo to be taken seriously. So, if you fancy a bit of a change or are up for trying something a little more glam, here’s how to get the looks…

Kristen Stewart’s Refined Rockabilly Fringe

Created by celebrity hair stylist Adir Abergel, Kristen’s fringe was an homage to American glamour and the working girl of the 40s and 50s. “The definition of this iconic style was the reminder of strength and determination,” shared Abergel. “Rosie the Riveter was a reference in my mind as well as the impact and symbol of women’s independence. I looked at references of Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, Bettie Page and those famous victory rolls that framed their faces for inspiration. ”

So how is it done? Abergel saturated Kristen’s hair with Virtue Volumizing Primer from roots to mid-shaft to create memory and hold, followed by Virtue Healing Oil to protect, mend and add shine from mid-lengths to ends.

After blowing out the rest of the hair with a round brush, creating the fringe couldn’t be easier. He simply parted a V shape at the front of the hair line and rolled up the fringe, securing it underneath with pins. Finish up with a healthy load of hairspray and you’re good to go.

Billie Eilish’s Monroe Sweep

Proving the versatility of a 70s-style shag cut, Billie’s Marilyn Monroe-esque hair was a talking point of the night. Since debuting her now iconic blonde shag earlier this year, the shag cut has gone on to become one of the most popular hairstyles of the year. But on last night’s red carpet, Billie styled her shag cut into a vintage glam look, complete with a voluminous side-swept fringe.

If you’re one of the many that already has a shag cut, styling it out à la Billie (or Marilyn) is actually easier than it looks. Start by washing your hair and applying some volumising mousse to the roots before rough drying it on a swept-over, side part.

Then, using a round hot brush, dry different layers of the hair, pulling it up and over as you go, and rounding under at the ends. Finish off by shaping any stray layers with tongs or a straightener and set with a shedload of hairspray. Et voilà!
