And while the fashion industry is ever-evolving in this world of conscious purchasing, it’s nigh on impossible to be 100% sustainable 100% of the time. Thankfully, certain labels are making it much easier to make those small changes.
Fashion is one of the most polluting industries on earth, but as customers grow more and more aware of the impact their shopping habits are having on the planet, the desire for environmentally-friendly fashion is increasing providing supply chains with the demand they need to justify a change of tack.
By 2050, it’s estimated that there will be a greater volume of plastic than fish in our oceans, and at some point in our lives we’ll consume fish that has digested plastic microfibres. Which is why it’s almost ironic that the swimwear industry is making some of the biggest waves (get it?) in the world of sustainable fashion.
From recycled fishing nets to recovered plastic bottles, materials such as Econyl – a soft lycra made from regenerated ocean waste that can be recycled and remoulded repeatedly – labels are producing pieces made using scrap *from* our oceans to be worn *in* our oceans. Neat.
Oh, and they’re damn chic.
