Amongst the many reasons why we begin our festive countdown over four months in advance is the anticipation of all the Christmas films hitting our screens in time for sofa season. And this year is already shaping up very nicely.
There are two kinds of people in the world: those who begin thinking about Christmas in August (hi!) and those who don’t want to hear a word of it until December. If you hadn’t guessed, we’re firmly in the first camp.
At the top of our list is Last Christmas, Emma Thompson’s romcom starring Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding and Michelle Yeoh. After eight years in the making, the film centers around a young aspiring singer whose hero is George Michael, the artist whose songs the film is loosely themed around.
“George Michael was putting together his new album when he passed,” stated the film’s director Paul Feig. “And one of our tracks is one of those songs, and it’s just an absolutely amazing song that I’m so excited the world is going to get to hear now.” Excited, indeed.
Emilia stars as a dissatisfied elf working in a seasonal pop-up shop and Henry plays the soup kitchen volunteer she keeps bumping into. Meanwhile, Emma will play Emilia’s mother, while her co-star Michelle will take on the role of Emilia’s boss.
Henry Golding posted a clip of the film’s trailer to Instagram, captioned: “A little christmas movie I made with my pal @paulfeig… @lastchristmasthemoviecoming to cinemas November 8th!”.
In the sneak peek, we are taken through various London landmarks in all their festive glory. From Alexandra Palace’s ice rink, to Oxford Street’s Christmas lights, even the most cynical of people will be counting down to the holiday season.
