She wrote on Archewell – the organisation founded by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s – website, “Time is among our greatest and most essential gifts… what would happen if we all committed 40 minutes to helping someone else or to mentoring someone in need? And then what would happen if we asked our friends to do the same?”
Happy Birthday to Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, who turned 40 yesterday (5 August 2021). In a trending video of her on a Zoom call with Melissa McCarthy, Meghan announced a new women’s initiative called 40 x 40 to celebrate her birthday.
Meghan has asked 40 of her friends, including Edward Enninful, Priyanka Chopra, Amanda Gorman, and Kerry Washington to join her in supporting women reentering the workforce.
Meghan shared that due to the coronavirus pandemic, millions of women globally have left the workforce, and less women will return to work after the pandemic. In times of such uncertainty, mentorship is paramount. 40 x 40 aims to support these women, building their confidence and skills to help them return to work.
Meghan and her friends are making a huge difference through the initiative. If you would like to be a mentor, Archwell has a list of resources for you to get involved in. This includes: tutoring a teenage girl who is studying online, donating outfits to a woman looking for a job, advocating for menstrual health and education for girls and women, and much more.
On her 40th birthday, Meghan has offered a gift to the world and inspired change that can have a ripple effect in so many areas. Once she said, “If there was a wrong, if there is a lack of justice, and there is an inequality, then someone needs to say something. And why not me?”
Meghan has been an inspiration for a long time, through her advocacy for women and people of colour. She writes on Archewell’s website, “The time that you donate can contribute to a global wave of service and set in motion meaningful impact in our own communities, and across the world.”
This is such a powerful initiative. We are so excited to see how Meghan and each of us, through supporting women with acts of kindness and compassion, can contribute to changing the world.
