This ‘Backward Makeup Hack’ Is Used By Hailey Bieber’s Makeup Artist

Hailey Bieber’s makeup has got people talking (the hashtag #haileybiebermakeup has over 245 million views on TikTok). But, fans have just caught onto the backward makeup hack her long-time makeup artist, Mary Phillips uses to create her softly sculpted, minimal makeup look.

Taking to TikTok, content creator Tara Sigari analysed the technique used by Mary on her famous clients including Hailey and Kendall Jenner. In her video, Tara says, “this beautiful face and this beautiful face have one thing in common – both have their makeup done by the beautiful Mary Phillips. I did some digging and I love one of the techniques she does on her clients and I’m going to show it to you. ”

She continues, “[Mary] preps the face, then before foundation – before anything – she goes in with a contour stick. I usually apply my foundation, my concealer and then I contour. She first went in with the contour. So in this video, what I’m going to do is half of my face with her technique and this other half I’m going to do with the foundation, concealer and then contour. ”

Tara adds, “She also conceals before anything, too… She does it around her lips, she does it around her nose and in the video she did it [between the brows] too. ”

Explaining why she wanted to try the trend, Tara said, “I’m literally so excited to see the results because both Hailey and Kendall always just look so natural, but so sculpted. ”

To merge the contour and concealer layers together with the foundation, Tara explains, ‘this is where it got really weird. [Mary] got a big, fluffy powder brush [dipped it in the foundation] and started going [in circular motions on the face]. »

After completing the other side of her face the way she would normally, Tara compares the two sides and declares she’ll be sticking to Mary’s technique going forward. “I’m blown away,» she said, «because it looks so seamless and it’s so sculpted, so glowy and there’s no lines…because it’s just a thin one layer, practically. ”

Our Social Media Manager Luca Wetherby-Matthews decided to test out the backward makeup hack to see if it’s as good as it looks.

“This makeup technique is going viral on TikTok, because it basically blends all of your makeup into one layer by applying contour and concealer before your foundation,» says Luca as she starts strategically placing the products all over her face before blending it all out. (For this look, Luca uses the Iconic London Sheer Bronze, the Anastasia Beverly Hills Magic Touch Concealer and the Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation)

“So after you’ve blended your contour and your concealer, you’re going to take a fluffy brush (which you would usually use for powder) and stipple your foundation all over what you’ve just done,” she explains.

Once she was done with the rest of her makeup, she concluded: “I’m seriously seriously into it. It’s given a really natural glow, it doesn’t feel cake-y, because it’s basically one layer of makeup and it blended so easily together. ”

“If I’m taking anything from this, I will be applying foundation with a fluffy brush forever. ”
