“Ankle boots are a closet staple come fall because they are so versatile that you can wear them with almost anything,” says celebrity stylist Soneca Guadara. “And they are essential to this season’s trends as hem lengths and silhouettes have changed,” adds celebrity and personal stylist Sarah Shirley. Shorter pants and midi skirts have been on the rise for a few seasons, she says, giving you plenty of opportunity to show off your stylish footwear.
We’ve officially reached the mid-point of fall, which means one thing: If you haven’t already, it’s time to swap your wardrobe. That includes tucking away your strappy stilettos to make room for the comfiest shoes of the season – ankle boots!
Of course, you can always opt for a basic black pair, but this season’s styles just might temp you to switch things up. From animal print to lace-up to two-toned, we tapped experts to round up the trendiest fall ankle boots, plus a few of our favorite picks to shop from, below.
Take your vintage obsession to new levels with some Victorian-style boots. These sleek booties stand out for their romantic tue-up style and ultra-slim heel – perfect for every stiletto lover. “This look can be a little costume-y, but if you add it to your wardrobe in the right way, it will add just the proper amount of femininity to your look,” says Guadara. “Pair with a frilly dress or with cropped pants for a sophisticated but edgy look.”

If you want to give your #ootd a pop, then try out some (faux, of course) animal prints. This summer, cow print and snakeskin patterns adorned every strappy sandal and open-toe wedge we could find, and it seems like the animal print craze is far from over. “There’s no arguing that animal prints are here to stay,” says Guadara. “They’re a timeless classic and most importantly a neutral. You can add to most anything you wear, and you will definitely not be boring!”

While combat boots have always been a staple, Guadara notes that they’re having a serious moment right now. “Paired with floral dresses, they add a little rock and roll to your outfit, but they’re also great paired with jeans,” she says. These boots are perfect for off-days or for adding a ’90s grunge vibe to any of your autumnal ensembles.

Though fall is known for its changing leaves and crisp chill, Mother Nature can also get pretty chaotic this time of year. That’s why Guadara recommends what she calls “storm-stompers,” aka heavy rubber-soled ankle boots in you can easily trudge through autumn’s most temperamental weather moments. “These are perfect if you want something to wear that is comfortable, trendy, and versatile.”

This summer, square-toed sandals could be found as far as the eye could see. And if you’re just not ready to let go of the geometrical style just yet, we have good news: The angular tip has made its way onto fall ankle boots. “Square-toed boots are definitely making a huge comeback,” says Guadara. “Not only do they have a sophisticated edge, but they’re comfy too because they are not pointy,” she adds.
