There’s Yet Another ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel in the Works

Game of Thrones fans rejoice! Variety reports that HBO has yet another prequel to the series in the works.

And for those of you who were awaiting the fateful end of the water cooler show that everyone you’ve ever met talks about endlessly, well, we’re very sorry, but it doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen anytime soon.

In May, it was announced that four – yes, four! – other prequels to the George R. R. Martin epic were happening, and this one makes five. Bryan Cogman, who has worked on the Game of Thrones since the first season, is signed onto to write for the new series. Martin will reportedly serve as an executive producer on all five prequels.

“I immediately fell in love with the book from page one, as most people do,” Cogman said in a 2011 interview, referring to theshow’s heady source material. “It’s probably the most fun I’ve ever had readinganything. It’s inspired storytelling, that’s all there is to it, and the characters are so rich, the themes are so varied. I love it. ”

While few details about the prequels have been released, Martin has been adamant that they are not spinoffs, and will not involve any members of the current cast. Apologies to all you Kit Harington devotees. All HBO will say about the projects is that they will “exploredifferent time periods of George R. R. Martin’s vast and rich universe,” which is cryptic, uninformative, and clearly meant to keep us on the edge of our seats. So far, it’s working.
