With more than 23,000 positive reviews on Amazon, the original Oontz Angle 3 seemed like a shoo-in for our beloved “best-loved Amazon product according to the reviewers” column. How can that many people love a $21 speaker?! But unlike bath towels, which are relatively simple to appraise for excellence – fluffy and absorbent or, um, not – good portable speakers need to check off a lot of boxes in order to rise above the abundant competition. It’s not just “how long will it hold a charge?” but also “how far away can I walk away before the Bluetooth gets disrupted?” Not just “how expensive?” but also “how durable?” and “how waterproof?”
A great portable speaker can be jostled around in a tote bag without concern. It can sit poolside no matter the weather (or the intensity of your splashing). It can even pose as a non-portable speaker, looking right at home on a coffee table or a nightstand, depending on where you want to plunk it.
Oh, yeah, and it also has to sound amazing without costing a zillion dollars, because someday you will probably lose it.
SHOP NOW: OontZ Angle 3 ULTRA by Cambridge Soundworks, $40, amazon.com
So while the original Oontz is perhaps the most-loved portable speaker on Amazon, its big brother the Oontz Angle 3 “Ultra” is our pick for best of the best. At just $40 it is indeed double the price of the original but still such a good deal (such a good deal that we basically ignored the fact that there’s also an Oontz Angle 3 “Plus”, because why upgrade one tier when you can go up two?). Sure, you can very easily spend over $100 on a portable speaker, but why bother when this is an option?) but now you don’t need to: The Ultra stays charged for 20 hours, so even if you forget to charge it overnight you’ll still be guaranteed good tunes on your second beach day. It’s also got more range: The Ultra’s Bluetooth will work up to 100 feet away from your phone as opposed to the 30 foot max of the original. And with a waterproof rating of IPX6, it’s highly splash- and spill-proof, as that’s basically the highest waterproof rating before you can actually take it scuba diving with you.
They call it “the perfect shower speaker,” which is a use we definitely hadn’t thought of but such a good one. Singing Aimee Mann to yourself just got way more exciting.
Furthermore, the 1,200+ five-star reviewers seem to agree. First and foremost, they can’t get over how good the sound is. “WOW!” remarks one reviewer. “Music compared to the Plus just sounded richer, yummier, more chocolatey (without the calories).” The techies out there will want to know that it’s got 14 watts of volume versus the original’s 10, but we’re more into that snack analogy. “They improved every single aspect of it,” says another reviewer. “I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a great priced bluetooth speaker that rivals even the bigger names in sound quality.” And seeing as it’s just 6.4 inches long and not even two pounds, you’ll pretty much never have to be without it.
