When you suffer from chronic back pain, having the right mattress can make the difference between waking up feeling great and spending your day in agony. Of course, you have to find the best mattress for your bad back first. And there’s no better time to shop for one now, as they’re all on sale for Presidents’ Day!
“It’s a decision you don’t want to get wrong because you’ll have to live with it for years to come,” Neel Anand, MD, professor of orthopaedic surgery and director of spine trauma at Cedars-Sinai Spine Center in Los Angeles, tells Yahoo Lifestyle.
You’ve probably heard at some point that the best mattress for a bad back is something incredibly firm, but Anand says that’s not true. “While specialists used to recommend an extra firm mattress as the ideal choice for proper back support, that guidance is outdated and has pretty much been overruled,” he says. In fact, using a mattress that’s too hard could actually create even more back pain because there isn’t enough “give” near pressure points like your hips and shoulders, he says.
Ultimately, you want to look for a mattress that’s of a medium firmness, and supports the curve of your spine, Jessalynn Adam, MD, an orthopedist with Baltimore’s Mercy Medical Center, tells Yahoo Lifestyle.
