Etsy’s recently-released trend report is partially to blame for our premature Christmas decoration obsession. As is routine, they’ve released their festive trend report – spearheaded by their Trend Expert, Dayna Isom Johnson – unveiling the Christmas decor trends we’re all going to be obsessing over, and damn are they pretty.

And forget what you thought you knew: high-quality Christmas decorations don’t have to be expensive. The likes of Amazon, Oliver Bonas, John Lewis, Selfridges and, of course, Etsy all stock beautiful and unique options for purse-pleasing prices. So whether you’re the kind of person who goes for a whole new colour scheme each year, or you’re just looking to add a few decorations to mark the year that was (not to mention replacing the baubles that always seem to break), there’s something in this edit for you.

This year, Etsy’s top Christmas trends include a range of inspirational themes to add sparkle to the season – from expanded colour palettes to beautiful table scapes for the return of dinner parties and decorations with an organic influence.

Searches for mushroom decor are up 366%, while searches for dried floral wreaths have skyrocketed by 68% and easy DIY kits are up by 1,056%. Etsy shoppers are looking forward to creating new, lasting memories with loved ones and making considered choices about who and what they surround themselves with.

Expanded Colour Palette

Shoppers are putting the ‘bright’back into ‘merry and bright’ this year, and embracing unexpected colour palettes and playful decoration that celebrate self-expression. There’s no right or wrong way to celebrate this season.

“On Etsy, we’ve already seen a 228% increase in searches for custom or personalised neon signs*, a 47% increase in searches for colourful, pastel, or neon holiday items*, and a 41% increase in searches for jewel tone items*,” Dayna told us.

Tablescaping Made Easy

“To set the scene for memorable meals together, shoppers are looking to create show-stopping tablescapes this year, and many have already started planning their spreads – with searches for place settings up 72%*, tablescape decor up 27%*, and napkin rings up 19%*,” Dayna continued. Luckily, this year, Etsy’s creative host of sellers are making it easier than ever to build elevated, Instagram-worthy dinner tables with tablescaping kits that not only remove the stress and hassle from decorating, but also invite shoppers to express their personal style.

Organic Influences

As many spent the last year turning to nature for a sense of calm and escape, it’s no surprise that Christmas decor is taking inspiration from organic influences this season – with searches for mushroom decor up 366%*, dried floral wreaths up 68%*, woodland creature ornaments up 33%*, and rustic or wooden holiday items up 30%*.

“I also predict that coastal elements – like driftwood and seashell accents – along with mountain-scape motifs will take centre stage for shoppers looking to incorporate this nature-inspired trend within their homes,” Dayna said.
