Succession season 4 trailer: It’s not not about getting back at dad

The Roy family is back in the Succession season 4 trailer, and they are as dysfunctional as ever. On Thursday, HBO dropped the trailer for the new season of their Emmy-winning hit show Succession and it looks like the cold war between Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) is heating to a boiling point after last season’s shock betrayal.

The Succession season 4 trailer opens with Logan’s assistant Kerry (Zoë Winters) asking the Roy children to consider giving their father a call. Given how Logan royally and expertly screwed over his kids in the season three finale when they attempted to push him out of Waystar Royco, an outgoing call is not exactly on the table.

“Is he apologising? ” asks Shiv as she approaches a private jet with Kendall and Roman. It doesn’t seem likely. When Kerry reveals that the best she can get out of Logan is a text message asking for a phone call, Roman draws a line in the sand. “Uh, I’m afraid we’re gonna need to hear that voice. ”

If you thought things were bad between the nuclear Roy family unit, things seem to be worse in the Wambsgans household. The trailer features a voice-over of Tom (newly minted Emmy-winner Matthew MacFadyen) asking Logan if he would still be in good graces with Logan if he and Shiv were to “bust up” as Logan puts it. “If we’re good, we’re good,” Logan says, cryptically. “Well, that’s heartening,” Tom says, as he processes the information. “I’m heartened by that. ” Yeah, seems promising.

Elsewhere in the trailer, we get glimpses of the kind of 1% style luxury that only being enmeshed in a multi-billion dollar corporate entity can provide. Sleek modern mansions, even more private jets, and fancy restaurants abound as the Roy children scheme at how best to get back at their father.

“This is not about getting back at dad,” says Shiv. “But if it hurts him, it wouldn’t bother me. ” Along the way,  Succession favourites pop up like Gerri (J. Smith Cameron) and Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård).  And on top of it all, we get a quick shot of Connor (Alan Ruck) and Willa (Justine Lupe) at the altar, promising yet another lavish wedding on the series.

Succession returns to HBO on 26 March and it’s clear the stakes are higher than ever. «Every move is crucial,» Tom tells Greg the Egg (Nicholas Braun). “Like Israel-Palestine, Greg, but harder. And much more important. ” Maybe not, but one thing is true: it’s still anyone’s guess who will get the kiss from Daddy.
