So it turns out our favourite scarf is giving us acne, here’s how…

We’ve all got that one winter scarf that doubles as a blanket when the cold snap bites. But while many of us are embracing swaddling ourselves to the max, our favourite wooly accessory could be increasing our skincare woes.

If you’ve experienced spots or acne around your neck, jawline or chest, you might want to consider that your winter scarf is the culprit behind your breakouts.

Like all items of clothing, fabric attracts sweat, dirt and day-to-day grime, creating a breeding ground for blemishes. And if you fling your scarf down on your chair or stuff it inside your bag, you could be multiplying the chances of transferring germs onto your skin.

So it turns out our favourite scarf is giving us acne, here's how. . .

Speaking to FEMAIL, Dr Meryn Patterson, Skin Expert and Cosmetic Doctor at Woodford Medical, recommends washing your scarf as often as your clothes to keep spots at bay.

“If you wear tight clothing, especially if you’ve worn them before and not cleaned them, they can trap sweat and increase friction and in turn lead to spots,” he said.

“Especially if the material is made man such as polyester. Cotton products work best since they let your skin breathe and let sweat evaporate easier. ”

Popping your scarf into a weekly hot wash isn’t the only thing that you need to combat a buildup of sweat, oil and dirt on your neck though – you need to step up your cleansing game too.

“A good skin cleansing routine is important and a good habit to get into to, since it helps to clear the skin of makeup, sweat and bacteria, even for spots that are not on your face,’ Dr Patterson continued.

“To tackle the problem, we’d recommend a good cleanser with Salicylic acid. This is because it doesn’t just strip your skin and take away it’s healthy lipids which would only create more damage and increases inflammation. Rather it repairs the skins barrier and cleanses it. ”

So, the next time you do your weekend laundry, set yourself a reminder to pop your scarves in too. A clearer complexion could be one spin away!
