Skincare junkie tried the world’s most advanced form of retinol

The latest in Medik8’s skincare offering, R-RETINOATE® spruiks a powerhouse list of ingredients.

It includes retinyl retinoate (which is said to be 8x more powerful than traditional retinol), encapsulated retinaldehyde (which is proven to work up to 11x faster than retinol), plus a double whammy of ceramides and targeted copper peptides. The all-in-one night cream is said to provide overnight rejuvenation and deep hydration, to leave your skin with a gorgeous, radiant glow.

Hi, my name is Kiké and I’m a skincare junkie. I’m in my late 20s and other than a bit of hyperpigmentation, I’m really thankful I don’t have any real skin issues, other than the occasional pesky spot around that time of the month.

With that being said, I take my skincare really seriously (prevention is better than cure, right? ). For the last couple of years I’ve been using a vitamin C serum during the day, topped with SPF 50 and retinol in the evenings. Testing this product, however, was a big step up in terms of advanced skincare and with my 30th birthday looming there was no better time to test out a product that claims to achieve a more youthful-looking complexion.

MEDIK8 R-RETINOATE® YOUTH ACTIVATING CREAM REVIEW:

I’m no retinol newbie. I’ve been dabbling with it for the last year or so, starting with an over the counter 0. 5% before eventually scaling up to 1. 0%.

For those new to it, prescribed retinol such as Tretinion or Retin-A is the gold standard when it comes to vitamin A. But most people (like myself) are not able to get our hands on it unless we’re willing to fork out for a hefty dermatologist bill. So over-the-counter alternatives are a god send. One I’ve been loving recently is Elizabeth Arden’s handy Retinol Ceramide Capsules, which are so handy, especially when I am travelling.

First thing to note is the packaging, which looked very sophisticated and slick in its glossy black exterior. It has a pump dispenser to release the product (I found a pump and a half to be enough to cover my face and neck) and I was surprised to see the cream itself was apricot in colour and also quite thick in texture.

Not going to lie, I was scared sh*tless about putting it on my face for the very first time, not knowing what to expect from such high strength ingredients. I braced myself for a stinging sensation, but as I closed my eyes to massage it in (and pray for the best), there was nothing of the sort. In fact, it felt really comforting on my skin and as an added bonus, it had a light scent of citrus fruits. Although it was thick in texture, it wasn’t at all greasy on the skin and it sunk in really nicely. So far so good, but my next thought was, ‘I’ll deffo wake up with a dry peeling face’.

The next morning, I rushed to the mirror to assess my face and the pessimist in me was prepared for the worse. However, my reflection revealed quite the opposite with zero peeling, no flaking and no dry patches. Nothing but glowing, radiant skin. What was most remarkable was the texture transformation. It was so darn smooth. Makeup glided over it like a treat

FINAL VERDICT:

I’ve been using this product now for just over four weeks and each morning when I wake, I’m still blown away by the results.

Now I know that skin typically has a six-week cycle before you start to see visible results, but my goodness does this product get to work fast. Whilst I don’t have any fine lines to give feedback on, what I can tell you is that my skin is the clearest it has been in a while. So much so, that I have switched my usual full coverage to a lightweight foundation.

Also, I don’t know if this is just a coincidence but I haven’t had a single spot since I’ve been using this. My mind is legit blown. The best thing, however, is how potent the product is with zero irritation. All I can say is this gets the double thumbs up from me. I think I may have just found my Holy Grail.
