Simone Biles Is the Most Decorated Gymnast in World Championship History

Simone first claimed the women’s record in 2018, when she matched Russian gymnast Svetlana Khorkina with 20 World medals, but surpassed her on a tiebreaker with a record 14 golds.

She quickly widened that margin at the 2019 championships with a win in the team event. After taking home medals in the all-around final and on vault, Simone set her sights on another piece of history: toppling the record held by Belarusian gymnast Vitaly Scherbo, who won 23 World medals during his career.

She did just that on the final day of competition, when she topped the podium in the balance beam final and floor exercise finals, bringing her career total to 25.

With a dominant performance at the 2019 World Gymnastics Championships, American gymnast Simone Biles has won an impressive 25 World Championship medals, 19 of which are gold, making her the most decorated gymnast of all time.

Since her senior debut in 2013, Simone has won at least one medal in all five events at the World Championships (balance beam, vault, uneven bars, floor exercise, and all-around), in addition to the team final. If you’re still struggling to wrap your mind around that (same), keep reading for an event-by-event breakdown.

Simone Biles, Absolute Badass, Literally Flipped Out Before Throwing Her World Series Pitch

Simone Biles is already known as the GOAT in the gymnastics world, but I wasn’t prepared for the badassery she brought to the baseball field. The 22-year-old Olympic athlete threw the first pitch at game two of the World Series between the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals on Oct. 23, and she added her own special twist – more specifically, a standing backflip with a full twist.

This isn’t the first time Simone has broken out the acrobatics for an Astros game. She showed off a similar stunt back in 2016, making her home state of Texas very proud. Flash forward three years later, and she’s got the same talent with a few more medals around her neck. Watch her awesome pitch in full above, and then keep reading to see a breakdown in pictures. You can tell, Astros outfielder Jake Marisnick is incredibly impressed.

More Than 10 Years After the Olympics, Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson Are Friendship Goals

American gymnasts Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson won gold and silver in the all-around final at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, but don’t think for a second that the two are rivals.

While Nastia and Shawn were pitted against each other by fans and commentators, the two were actually best friends and roommates at the games – and though the media narrative eventually took its toll, they found their way back to each other a few years ago, just before Shawn’s wedding to Andrew East. Today, Shawn is expecting her first child, and Nastia has been asked to be the baby’s godmother!

It just goes to show that even the most competitive sports can bring people together. Oh, and you should never underestimate the power of female friendships. Click through the gallery for more sweet pictures of Nastia and Shawn together!
