Silicones in shampoos is “the enemy” or “panacea”?
Onosnovatelnee brand of natural cosmetics (@natureal.ua), cosmetic trichologist Vita Lyasota said that such silicones in the composition of what means you should avoid them and are there any consequences of the daily use of cosmetics with polymers.
What are siliconesand to whom are they appropriate?
Silicone is a synthetic polymer, creating an impenetrable film on the surface of the skin or hair. When manufacturing cosmetics, it is used to create a wow-effect – gives smooth and works instantly.
There are means in which it is the place to be. For example, in cosmetics for the care of the regrown part of the hair. It is a dead structure, and she doesn’t need a constant supply of oxygen for metabolic processes. But there is one rule that must be followed. Silicon film must be periodically washed off with shampoo for deep cleaning. If this is not done, the silicone is layered, strands of your hair. If the bulbs are loose, it may cause hair loss.
Dull and brittle – another possible scenario of daily use of silicones. Enveloping hair and creating film, they do not allow proteins “embedded” in the damaged areas of the hair. After a few months of use, the ends will start to break off, and the strands will lose the natural Shine and silkiness.
If you’re trying to grow long and don’t want to cut off the ends, silicone can be a solution to the problem, subject to simple rules (tips Pro, how to grow hair, read here). First – do not use these tools every day, the second is to use a regular shampoo for deep cleaning, the third – periodically give hair a “detox”, using cosmetics without silicone in the composition`.
Cosmetics designed to care for the scalp, should not contain silicones under any pretext. They cause tremendous harm. Silicones create an impenetrable film, providing a “greenhouse effect”. This is perfect conditions for reproduction of pathogens. Result: dandruff, flaking and other reactions on the part of the scalp. In addition, the film violates the metabolic processes in the follicles – the hair can start to fall out.
What are silicones and which ones should be avoided?
A polymer composed of silicone and oxygen and has four connections, two of which – the radicals (methyl, phenyl, methyl, ethyl). It is a radical group changes the property of silicones – volatility, water solubility and other. They are easy to find in the composition of shampoos or hair masks – most have suffixes con or сonol. Silicones can be divided into several large groups.
Water soluble silicones. Used in cosmetics to impart smoothness and Shine. They wash off with water, but not completely. If you ignore the deep cleaning, silicones will accumulate. This group includes: Lauryl Methicone Copolyol, Dimethicone Copolyol.
Partially soluble silicones. Do not wash off with plain water – you need mild surfactants to cleanse hair. On the labels they are disguised under the names: Amodimethicone, Amodimethicone & Trideceth-12, Behenoxy dimethicone.
Volatile silicones. “Encoded” as Cyclomethicone. Volatile silicones evaporate from the hair surface. Again, not completely – some of them need to be removed with special tools.
Fat-soluble silicones. This group can be up to infinity – it is huge. The most harmful – demetikona (polymers with two methyl groups). They are used in the production of both expensive and cheaper tools. Dimethicone (dimethicone) is a hydrophobic substance. Getting on the skin of the head, it interferes with the normal hydration and regeneration of cells, disrupting natural metabolic processes.
Who should not use silicones?
Silicones – not “drug” means. If you have problems with scalp or hair, they need to be addressed differently. Most often they are internal – you need to be tested. Start with blood chemistry and analysis of mineral composition of the hair. To check your thyroid, iron level, vitamin D.
If you have a sensitive scalp, avoid silicones in the composition. Accumulate, they can cause allergic reactions that manifest in the form of itching, redness, peeling.
Silicones provide only a visual effect, smoothing and imparting luster. From hair loss they will not save. On the contrary, will make them more fragile and brittle.
Some groups of silicones have a charge – they are “glued” to the scalp even more. Wash them very difficult! Any silicone (even water soluble) will sooner or later lead to the formation of biofilms, which will have a negative impact on the condition of the hair. Ensure your hair (at least sometimes) a small “vacation”.
