Serena Williams Receives Outpouring of Support After Revealing She Missed Her Baby’s First Steps

Moms dream of being there for their baby’s firsts: first words, first time eating solids, first full night of sleep, etc. Unfortunately, that’s not always the reality.

So when Serena Williams shared the heartbreaking reality that she missed her 10-month-old daughter Alexis Olympia‘s first steps while training for Wimbledon, parents (and fans) on the internet flocked to give her support and love.

Serena originally tweeted that she “cried” after learning she missed this milestone, but Twitter users encouraged her to turn those tears of sadness into happy ones.

The responses varied, some fellow moms told Serena the steps don’t count until she sees them herself; others recounted their own stories of missing their little ones’ “firsts. ”

The general consensus? Serena doesn’t need to guilt or shame herself for being away during this moment. She, like all moms, can be proud of her accomplishments and the example she sets for her child, and know there will be plenty of steps in the future. Ahead, see Serena’s original tweet, as well as the supportive comments that followed.
