During a particularly buzzy awards season, where the fashion at times took a backseat to current events and social issues, the2018 Oscars red carpetwas a bit of a question mark. Would stars go all-out in usual fashion, or would it be a more subdued, somber event?
Where the beauty looks were concerned, it was certainly a case of the former.

While the Oscars are usually a sea of “safe” hair and makeup choices – tidy updos, perfect red lips – this years event was a less-snoozy departure. Moody, aubergine lipstick was trending, making an appearance on Whoopi Goldberg and Taraji P. Henson.
Then there was the epic duo of Lupita Nyongo and Danai Gurira, who showed up together looking absolutely resplendent (not a word we use often) in glow-y, metallic makeup and some of the most intricate and beautiful hairstyles weve seen this side of Wakanda. Shout-out to St. Vincent and Andra Day for embracing kooky hair accessories – a black, flower-like pouf and small violet flowers, respectively – which lent a bit of levity and DGAF-ness to the carpet.
Arguably the most unexpected beauty trend of the evening involved scissors. Margot Robbie, Saoirse Ronan and Greta Gerwig each showed up on the carpet with freshly-cropped styles, similarly modern and of-the-moment in their clean, blunt lines and blonde hues. Are classic updos a thing of the past?
