Hello, GLAMOUR readers, I’m back with my second column and very excited to talk about my curly hair, as well as share some amazing tips that keep my curls looking beautiful and healthy.
I’ve struggled with my curls in the past, not knowing how to treat them or what products I should or shouldn’t use. I’ve also spent years battling my curls, turning to my trusty straighteners so I don’t have to deal with all the frizz.
However, 4 years ago, I realised how lucky I truly am to have curly hair so I finally decided to embrace my curls in all their glory. Since then, I’ve devised some pretty handy hacks for keeping my curls in check and while it’s a lot of work, it’s so worth it. Here are the tips that have totally changed my curly hair game.
1. Deep conditioning
Deep conditioning is very important when you have curly hair; it builds the strength and integrity of the curls and gives the curls a good dose of hydration. This is important for everyone who has curls since curly hair in naturally dry and needs all the hydration it can get to get the bounce it needs.
2. Keep on top of regular trims
Trimmed hair is very important. Split ends never curl as beautifully as healthy, trimmed hair does. This is why it’s very important to have trimmed hair every now and then to get the most beautifully curled look.
3. Use a T-shirt when drying the hair
Did you know a regular towel can cause a lot of frizz in your curls? I swear by using an old cotton T-shirt to dry my hair when I get out of the shower. The fibres of the T-shirt are much softer and gentler than a towel.

4. Invest in a satin pillowcase
I highly recommend using a silk or satin pillowcase to banish frizzy hair. Alongside the no friction factor, which means less ruffling of your hair during sleep (i. e. no more bed head! ), it’s thought that silk also helps to control sebum production – great news for those of us with oily hair types.

5. Try using products with no alcohol
It’s important to avoid hair products with alcohol in. For example, I never use hairspray when I’m wearing my hair curly. Hairspray contains a lot of alcohol, which can cause frizz and dries the hair out even more. If you still like to create volume, I recommend using sea salt spray, which is made with a sugar base.
6. Shower using tepid water
When showering, don’t wash your hair with hot water.
7. Avoid touching your hair too often
This will wear the hair down and flatten the curls. The curls need to be bouncy and alive. If you touch your hair too often, you will ruin the structure.
8. Get acquainted with your diffuser
When blowdrying my hair, I always love using a diffuser. This might not work for everyone but I always recommend trying it and seeing how it works for your hair. I like to blow-dry my hair upside down using a diffuser, which creates the extra volume I love from my roots to ends.
9. It’s all about the coconut oil
Last but not least, I like to treat my hair using a coconut treatment once a week. Coconut oil works wonders for my hair. I know that some women prefer an avocado treatment, just make sure to use a good and natural oil treatment for your hair once a week to feed, hydrate and moisturise it.
If you follow all of these steps – or even just a few of them – I promise you will achieve the curly look you have always wanted. See it as an investment and you will slowly start to see some changes… I promise!
