Sapodilla

Sapodilla belongs to the family Spotovye; originates from tropical areas of America, it grows in the wild throughout Central America from Venezuela and Colombia in the South to Mexico in the North. Cultivated in many countries in the tropics of America and Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Philippines, USA (Hawaii), Indonesia, parts of Africa etc.).

Evergreen tree 15-20 m tall with ovate or elliptic, leathery leaves. Flowers small, white. Sapodilla fruits are round or oval, 5-10 cm in diameter, with 10-12 solid black seeds and succulent yellow-brown sweet pulp.

Sapodilla should be eaten no later than two days after purchase, since after this period the fruit drastically change the flavour. This fruit is recommended to eat when it is ripe because the unripe fruit contains tannin and a milky latex, and these substances are not very pleasant to the taste.

Choose fruit with a whole skin, which feels slightly soft. Eat only the ripe Sapodilla. Clean the fruit from the skins and add the pulp of some unusual shape, or simply cut the fruit with a knife lengthwise into four parts. Don’t forget to remove the seeds. Sapodilla is recommended to store in the refrigerator for five to seven days, or if the fruit is still unripe, for up to six weeks.

Useful properties of Sapodilla

Sapodilla fruits contain 75-85% water, 23% carbohydrates 0,6% protein, 1.0 percent fat, 0.5 percent ash, 20% crude fiber, calorie content fruits – 70 calories/100 g. Sapodilla is rich in vitamins A and C, plant proteins, carbohydrates, iron, potassium and calcium.

Fruits are used fresh and for production of halva, jams, jellies, and other products.
