Rihanna documentary director gives update on six-year project

Rihanna has had quite the year. After announcing her pregnancy with A$AP Rocky early last year, and gracing us with several stunning bump-baring red carpet looks, she welcomed her son in May and was the first to share his face with the world in December.

Now, a new documentary that’s said to be an “unfiltered” look into the singer’s life could soon be released — but the exact date is up to the 34-year-old mogul.

The director of the project, Peter Berg, began working with the Fenty founder on the project in 2015, when he called the documentary an “unfiltered look into Rihanna’s life and how she’s ascended to become a global icon”.

In 2018, the director, said it could be released that year. Nearly five years on, and still no documentary, Berg said it is “done” and that he’s waiting for Rihanna to approve it.

“Waiting for [Rihanna] to approve it,” Berg said when asked by The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s done and sold, and Amazon’s ready. She’s a perfectionist, so we keep adding. It’s been six and a half years of filming, so, yeah, it’s ready to come out. We’re just waiting on her to say, ‘Yeah, let’s do it. ’ I don’t know. Maybe it’ll be a 10-year project. ”

He added that he was surprised when he was asked by the star to do the doc, as he considers his work (which includes directing Friday Night Lights and Battleship) as a “bit more masculine”.

“This has allowed me to dip in and out of her life while I’m doing other things,” he continued.

“I’ve loved it — watching her in the studio, seeing her turn Fenty into this billion-dollar entity and, now, being a mum. It’s such an enriching experience, I don’t really care how long it takes. ”

Rihanna is set to perform at this year’s Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show on 12 February, which will mark her first live performance in five years.

“It was now or never for me,” the singer recently told the Associated Press. “It was a challenge that I welcomed. It was a stage bigger than anything I’ve ever done. ”
