Rejoice, a ‘Dirty Dancing’ sequel is happening! Here’s what we know so far

33 years after the original, the sequel to the hit summer romance was announced on 7th August. Here’s what we know so far…

It has been confirmed that Jennifer Grey, who starred as Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman – who meets dance teacher Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) at summer camp – will return for the film, and also produce the project. It will be directed by Jonathan Levine.

Swayze sadly died of pancreatic cancer in 2009, aged 57. Jerry Orbach, who played Baby’s dad Jake Houseman, also passed away in 2004.

Exciting news forfilmfans, iconic 1980s flickDirty Dancingis getting a sequel!

Any word on the plot?

Not yet, but the film will reportedly be set in the 1990s.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said: “It will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for, and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the company’s history. ”

We’re hoping there will be musical hits aplenty, given that the original film’s key tune ‘(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life’ won the Oscar for ‘Best Original Song’ at the 1988 Academy Awards.

Spinoff film Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, starring Diego Luna and Romola Garai was released in 2004 to mixed reviews.

And a release date?

No further details have been released, but we imagine the film’s release is a while away, given that the Coronavirus pandemic has delayed filming across the industry. We’ll update you when more info becomes available.

What’s the reaction been like?

A majority of fans are delighted at the news of a sequel, while others have more of a ‘if it ain’t broke’ attitude…

We don’t know about you, but we couldn’t be more excited for Baby’s return (even though, of course, it won’t be quite the same without Swayze).
