Our Fashion Editor’s pick of the major highlights from Topshop’s epic new autumn IDOL collection

Hey, who needs actual *plans* to put together a #lewk? ‘Dress for yourselves’, that’s what we’re always being told, and it just so happens that ‘ourselves’ wants every single thing from Topshop’s newly-launched autumn IDOL collection.

If we’ve learned anything about ourselves over the last, most bizarre, few months, it’s that while we’re perfectly happy watching Normal People for the eighth consecutive week in our tracksuit bottoms, the minute one of our high street heroes launches a new season edit you can bet we’re pausing Paul Mescal (momentarily) for a scroll through the goods. Regardless of the empty calendar hanging purposelessly on the wall…

One of the high street stalwart’s most popular lines, IDOL is known and loved for its signature rock and roll edge which plays out via rich, luxurious fabrics and punchy prints, often in deep, seductive tones. Unsurprisingly, for autumn/winter 2020, this identifiable DNA still rings very true.

Heavy forest greens, slate greys and deep reds are offset against a secondary colour palette of warm creams and butterscotches, while a particularly epic leopard-print coat forms the backbone of the collection’s printed offering.

A more unexpected – but no less welcome – animal print piece comes in the form of a zebra-stripe puffed-sleeve knit, while the staple seventies paisley print also makes an appearance splashed across a beautiful black and white high-neck blouse.

But while the collection’s prints are no doubt a highlight, it’s the two reversible faux fur coats that we predict will sell out pronto. One in a buttery beige and the other in a perfectly seasonal khaki, they hit that sweet spot between being a real statement piece while remaining a timeless classic that will last you for years to come.

Have we teased you enough? We thought as much.
