Made from endless metres of tulle, the frothy, rainbow-coloured pieces were emblazoned with phrases like: “Sorry I’m late, I didn’t want to come”, “I am my own muse”, and “I’m not shy I just don’t like you”, but it was possibly the funniest that made its way onto the Met Museum steps via 22-year-old Hailee Steinfeld.
We first saw Viktor Rolf’s wildly Instagrammable slogan dresses on the Haute Couture runway in Paris back in January, but it wasn’t until last night’s Met Gala that we got to see it translate onto the red carpet.
Offering up an almost ombre gradient of colours, it swept from bright lilac through a deep yellow and into a variety of greens as it skirted out across layers and layers of tulle.
But, of course, it was the slogan splashed across it that garnered the most attention and, ironically, ensured every camera in the vicinity was pointing in her direction.
“NO PHOTOS PLEASE” read the dress, that will no doubt be one of the most photographed of the evening.
The lesson here? When your mum complained that ‘People always want what they can’t have’ she was right. And that extends to photographers on a red carpet.
