Nicki Minaj Calls Out Sexism in the Hip-Hop Industry

After decades of being swept under the rug, conversations about sexism are finally beginning to happen in a range of professional industries, from Hollywood to academia.

And leave it to Nicki Minaj to ensure that the hip-hop world is no different. When rapper Russ wrote on Twitter yesterday that “People needa put more respect on @NICKIMINAJ name,” Minaj responded with words that almost every woman can probably relate to.

“In any field, women must work TWICE as hard to even get HALF the respect her male counterparts get. When does this stop? ” she asked.

Amen to that. Minaj also revealed that when she’s collaborated with male rappers like Kendrick Lamar and Drake in the past, it wasn’t necessarily their choice, but rather at the behest of the record label. She even dug up a tweet of Lamar’s from seven years ago where he claims that more men hate Minaj than women do.

Minaj’s tweets currently have hundreds of thousands of likes and retweets, proving that there’s a hunger for honest, open discussion of gender discrimination, especially in male-dominated industries like hip-hop.
