Official Secrets, starring Keira Knightley and Matt Smith, tells the true story of Katharine Gun, a 28-year-old Mandarin translator for the Government Communications Headquarters who was charged with leaking information to the press about the war in Iraq, in particular a memo exposing the illegal spying operation between America and Britain. The aim being to push other members of the UN’s Security Council into voting for the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Keira Knightley is having one hell of a year. With her captivating performance in The Aftermath and her upcoming role as feminist activist Sally Alexander in Misbehaviour, the British actress is having somewhat of a comeback moment and we are here for it. What’s next? A seriously epic thriller based on true events.
In the official trailer, Katharine can be seen engaged in a series of intense interrogations after breaching the official secrets act. “I do not gather intelligence so the government can lie to the British people” she says. “If we do not go public, we would be conceiving that no one can ever tell the people when their government is lying”. We are also introduced to Katharine’s husband Yasar, a refugee from Turkey who the government attempt to deport in light of her actions. Oooh, the drama!
