Twelve months and about a dozen different samples later, and sunscreen is my now go-to product even on the laziest of days. One that has earned its place in my permanent rotation (a big deal for me, since I have a pretty minimal skincare routine to begin with) is a new SPF product from Avène.
In Belgium, where I grew up, French pharmacy brands like Avène were a staple in our home, so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this tinted mineral sunscreen.
I’ve had a skin-care routine before I really even understood what that meant – thank you for that, Mom! – but a defining moment in my adult experience took place last year when I asked a dermatologist to critique my regimen. I learned a bunch of helpful things, but her main tip was for me to wear sunscreen more regularly – and wear at least SPF 30.
Out of all the sunscreens I’ve tried this past year, I like this one the most because it’s unscented (I’m supersensitive to smell), gives me a healthy looking glow, and – most important – it doesn’t pill, especially when I layer it over a serum or moisturiser. Since it’s tinted, I also don’t have to worry about a white cast, which is actually pretty common among mineral sunscreens.
Mineral sunscreens, as a reminder, are the kind that dermatologists frequently recommend to people with sensitive skin because they tend to be gentler on skin. Unlike chemical sunscreens that prevent sun damage by absorbing and changing UV rays before they hit your skin (but can cause irritation or allergic reactions), mineral sunscreens use natural ingredients like zinc and titanium dioxide that act as a physical barrier against the sun’s rays.
As far as coverage goes, I’ll admit that I was worried the tinted sunscreen would look too orange on my very pale skin, but a dime size amount of product is enough for me. It blends really easily and left me with that lovely, glowing complexion I mentioned before. If you’re not into tinted sunscreens, it also comes in a non-tinted version as well. And at 1.3 oz, it’s the perfect little travel companion.
