We’re not saying you have to go cold turkey, but being more mindful about your alcohol consumption can only reap benefits, especially when we’re battling the ominous COVID-19 virus and told to avoid social situations and pubs.
So you made it through Dry January (bravo!) and probably realised that cutting down on alcohol isn’t as complex or terrifying as you might have thought, right?
It seems you’re not alone. ‘Mindful Sobriety’ is a burgeoning health trend that sees health-conscious millennials combining the practise of mindfulness with sobriety to cut back on their booze. In short, mindful sobriety involves asking yourself ‘do I really need that glass of Sauvignon Blanc?’, listening to your gut and feeling better as a result.
According to Emily Syphas, the founder of Sober & Social, who runs monthly events to build a sober community to help others feel empowered in social situations sober, the trend is only gaining momentum. “It’s not surprising that Mindful Sobriety is the next trend as we are becoming more aware of what we are putting into our bodies and wanting to maintain our mind, body and soul balance,” she told GLAMOUR.
“We are starting to become aware of our alcohol intake and the effect it is having on our overall equilibrium and questioning ‘is it really worth it?’.
“From not sleeping as well, feeling de-motivated, not eating healthy and not being the versions of ourselves on a hangover, it makes sense that more people than ever are choosing to significantly cut down or completely cut out the booze.”
To mark the new trend, with Emily’s help, we’ve rounded up the best Instagram accounts to follow that will keep you inspired on your mindful sobriety journey. Cheers to that!
