Meghan Markle is about to be featured on another magazine cover, but she’s skipping the celebratory event out of respect to the late Queen Elizabeth II.
On September 15, Variety announced that the Duchess of Sussex was chosen as one of this year’s honorees for its Women in Power issue and gala, which will take place in Los Angeles later this month.
However, due to the death of the queen, Markle’s cover will be postponed and the duchess will reportedly not be in attendance at the celebratory event on 28 September — nine days after the funeral.
Other honorees include Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, Malala Yousafzai, Oprah Winfrey, Ava DuVernay, and Elizabeth Olsen.
This is not the only way Meghan Markle is choosing to show her respect for her husband’s grandmother. It was recently revealed that the Duchess of Sussex has placed her hit Spotify podcast, Archetypes, on hold. On 12 September the podcast’s “about” page was updated with the message, “New episodes of Archetypes will be paused during the official mourning period for Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II. ”
Meghan Markle’s “unfiltered” podcast has reportedly been ill-received by the Firm. “I’m told Buckingham Palace aides were most definitely not keeping calm, nor carrying on after the show’s premiere on Tuesday, worried about what else might be shared over the next 12 weeks,” Yahoo! royals executive editor Omid Scobie wrote on August 24.
Meghan Markle has been on the receiving end of royal family tensions and vicious tabloid fodder since well before she and husband Prince Harry made their big move to the United States in 2020. However, Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle reunited in a grand display of unity following queen’s passing on September 8.
During an emotional group outing to visit with well-wishers on 10 September, one teen girl hugged Markle to show her support for the duchess, telling CNN, “I just wanted to show her that she’s welcome here and wanted to hug her after everything that’s happened. ”
