Longtime Senator and war hero John McCain dies at age 81

On Saturday, after a year-long struggle with brain cancer, John McCain passed away. The longtime Republican Senator served for 30 years representing the state of Arizona. McCain is also known for his presidential run in 2008, and being an internationally renowned Vietnam War hero.

Following his father and grandfather, McCain joined the US Navy, where he carried out airstrike missions. In 1967 though, he was captured by North Vietnamese forces and spent six years being tortured as a prisoner of war.

When he was rescued, he was awarded a number of military medals, including two Purple Hearts. Since news of his tragic death, touching tributes have been flooding the internet, including these statements from his family.

Cindy McCain later stated that “the entire McCain family is overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from around the world. Thank you. ” Rest in Peace John McCain, you were truly an American hero.
