That’s why my jaw almost dropped to the floor with surprise when I learned that an official Grinch makeup collection is on its way… which was followed by my immediate confusion because the collection is coming from none other than Kylie Jenner. Huh?
I’m not big on holiday traditions. I do love the sight of a decked-out Christmas tree and a blanket of frost on my window, but I never much cared for the overdone ritual of it all, probably because my family never did. Every holiday season, my sole request is that I get to sit down with my loved ones and watch the original cartoon of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, followed immediately by the live-action Jim Carrey film (never 2018’s The Grinch because I am opposed to the Benedict Cumberbatch version, as a concept).
Before I get into it, let me show you what’s inside the Kylie Cosmetics x The Grinch collection, which is a collaboration with Dr. Seuss’s literary estate. As it goes for most of Jenner’s makeup collections, this one is completely stacked with 19 products: a 16-shade eye shadow palette, four eye shadow sticks, a set of six lipsticks, one matte Lip Kit, one powder blush, one powder highlighter, two Shimmer Eye Glazes, two lip glosses, and one liquid eyeliner.
The individual products range from $16 (£12) to $60 (£45), but the whole shebang is available in a bundle for $265 (£200) (you can also pay a little extra for a “PR box” – the super-elaborate kind of mailer you usually see influencers opening on Instagram). To a Grinch fanatic like myself, it’s the ultimate holiday-themed makeup collection.
But, uh… does anyone else find this a weird flex for Kylie Cosmetics? The brand is not known for officially licensed collections or collaborations (at least not with anyone outside the Kardashians’ inner circle). Not that I’m complaining because this collection is intensely cool. It’s just coming from the last brand I’d ever expect it to come from. According to the company, there’s a pretty simple explanation: Jenner just really likes the Grinch.
“I have so many memories of reading How The Grinch Stole Christmas every year during the holidays and now my daughter loves it,” Jenner says in a statement provided to Allure. “There are so many great colours and shapes to play up with the theme. ”
Of all the things I thought I’d have in common with Kylie Jenner, this is not one of them. But hey, if it’s going to result in collections like this, I’m all for it.
