The friendship betweenTitanic co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet has long been documented, from Winslet crying in the crowd when Leo finally took home an Oscar last year to DiCaprio calling Kate “the best actor of her generation. ”
But Winslet finally cleared up the one thing we’ve all been wondering for the past two decades: Did the pair ever have the hots for one another?
The answer, somehow, is no. “I think for Leo and I it was seven months of very intense work, we were both really very young,” she told British talk show host Lorraine Kellyyesterday during a promotional tour for her new film The Mountain Between Us. “And luckily, and this was the fortunate thing, we never fancied each other! ”
Really? Never? Even when DiCaprio was the single biggest heartthrob inthe world? Even when they were filming that steamy “draw me like one of your French girls” scene? “I know that’s really annoying to hear, sorry,” Winslet acknowledged. “We really never did. So it did mean that we were able to have this… be able to tease each other, which we still do, which is really amazing. ”
Indeed, the pair has copped in the past to occasionally reciting Titanic lines to one another, which proves that they’re really not all that different from us. Except that, you know, they were actually in the movie, whereas we just watched it on repeat at slumber parties every weekend for like two years. Which, according to Winslet, is something the kids still do today: “The lovely thing about Titanic for me now, my children and their friends… their friends say, “Oh I love the bit in Titanic when you did…” they are reciting lines from Titanic that, I mean, I’ve long forgotten! …I say to them, you weren’t born when that film was made, which makes me feel very old. ”
Okay, so to recap: Kate and Leo never had crushes on each other, Titanic turned 20 this year, kids still watch it, and we are suddenly feeling very old.
