Jennifer Lawrence just broke another fashion commandment

Jennifer Lawrence claims she wasn’t trying to make any kind of statement when she wore flip-flops on the Cannes red carpet, but she keeps breaking fashion rules! Does she have an agenda? Or is she so style agnostic that she doesn’t know she’s doing it? Either way, J. Law always pulls off whatever “style no-no” she embraces, including, yes, those Cannes sandals.

Just a couple months after pairing socks with sandals—a controversial combo favored by frat boys—the Hunger Games star stepped out in a black tank and navy blue slacks. Not only super dark given the August heat in NYC, but technically… once upon a time at least… navy blue with black was verboten.

We didn’t make this up just to be annoying! It’s a thing. Ask your fussiest aunt. (You’re also not supposed to “mix metals”—there’s a whole John Mulaney bit about this—or wear black and brown leather together, just FYI. )

Obviously the “rules” are’t so strict anymore, and Lawrence wisely threw a light blue button-down over her tank, so the outfit looks more like shades of the same tone rather than two similar colours that kind of clash.

Still, add to this her pointed-toe shoes and an olive green Loewe tote, and Lawrence looks a bit…corporate!

Her sunglasses are the most trendy touch, and while she’s always had a very simple style, it’s also usually pretty carefree. This look makes me think she just came from a meeting, which, given the strike, is also against the rules—and strike rules, unlike fashion rules, are rules by which we must abide.

What style taboo will this rogue Jennifer Lawrence embrace next? Socks on hands? Two hats at once? Visible panty line? Wearing something wrinkly to a red-carpet event? That one would really make my mom said. Please don’t make my mom sad, Jen.
