We’ve heard of the boyfriend bob as seen on Kaia Gerber, Kim K and Dua Lipa and we’ve lusted over 70s blonde and tonal brunette.
Now, resident hair columnist Jen Atkin’s top five hair trends that you’ll be seeing everywhere this year…
2020 was the year we became brave with DIY hair and took the salon skills in-house to the best of our abilities, creating Zoom-ready styles and experimenting with bold home dye kits. And when it comes to chic, minimal-effort hair trends, 2021 will be no different.
Pigtail plaits
We’re seeing more pigtails and braids come back this year – ideal if you can’t get your head around the more complex plait styles out there. Pigtails are a way to get heatless waves or just a cute throw-back way to put your hair back beyond a bun or pony.
Hair jewellery
Accessories have been getting more and more popular as they bring new ways to style your hair without a ton of effort or deep hair knowledge. Instant glam for that morning Zoom meeting without any required brushing or styling? Sign us up.
Colour Blocking
People are playing with accents and expression a lot right now. Colour blocked hair tends to grow quick so it’s fairly low commitment; also very reminiscent of the 90s/2000s, when colour was commonly placed throughout the hair to create two- or tri-tone colour (as seen on ’00s Christina Aguilera).
Curtain Bangs/Shag Cuts
We’re seeing lots more requests for layers and face framing in the haircuts people are opting for – bangs make a pony or bun instantly chicer and these layered cuts tend to grow out really well.
Natural Haircolouring
Growing out, bringing closer to natural, people aren’t going into the salon as often – lower maintenance is desired right now, not to mention more convenient.
