Why the gradient manicure is this season’s hottest nail trend

Can’t decide on just a single colour?

Lucky for you (and us!) multi-tonal nails are in.

Animal print isn’t just for fashion, darling.

Moo-ve over zebra print, there’s a new black and white design in town.

This brings a whole new meaning to ‘nude nails’.

Neon? Now we’re talking.

Need design inspo? Just look at your most used emojis on your phone.

Peachy keen.

Self-love is the best kind of love.

If our crystal obsession wasn’t already at an all-time high, this amethyst mani just took us over the edge. Bare with while we go switch on a salt lamp and jade roll for twenty minutes to calm down.

The universal sign for ‘I love Sunday fry-ups.’

If you can’t say how you feel, write it on your nails. The smaller, the sneakier.

Let’s be honest, glitter nail polish is a total b*tch to remove on your own. This way you get the glitz, without the hassle.

The latest manicure trend to sweep social media? Shattered glass nails. According to Pop Sugar, the trend hails from Korea and uses ‘tiny shard-like shapes of iridescent paper to create a light-reflecting manicure.’ It’s so damn pretty, don’t you agree?

Still clinging onto summer? Join the club. Let your nails carry the season over via dried flower nails, which see minuscule flowers pressed, dried, and placed onto the nails. So chic.

Everyone on Instagram is keen for a slice of the tropics (no matter the weather) with negative space manis getting a fruity twist.

More of a strawberry gal than watermelon? This teeny print design is cute AF.

Jelly nails are the hot new manicure trend sweeping Instagram and we’re kinda into it. With serious 90s vibes, the manicure style is also being dubbed ‘see-through nails’ or ‘glass nails’ and is achieved by applying a clear translucent tip to the nail. Are you ready for this jelly?

Minimalist rainbows and metal nail art? It doesn’t get much cooler than this. Nails by Park Eunkyung of @nail_unistella.

A little zesty nail inspiration to get you through this gloomy day on the hands of @fashionablykay.

Negative space nails are probably the biggest nail art trend of 2018 and we’re loving this geometric take on it by @paintboxnails.

Bejewelled nails are perfect for showcasing all your creativity – very Dolce & Gabbana. Would you have these for your next mani?

Half-moon designs are nothing new, but we absolutely love the block colour combo of red and pink seen on the runway at Moschino. The perfect accompaniment to your pale pink coat.

This goes much further than a generic nail art idea. That’s right: what you’re seeing right there are actual tattooed nails! Yes, there’s a way to tattoo your nails at tattoo parlours just like they do on your skin (who knew?). The inking lasts for 6 weeks and apparently doesn’t hurt that much. Would you try it?

The craze for crystals has invaded our yoga studios, front rooms and pockets. Now you can hop on the trend by requesting rose quartz nails too. Pretty, no?

This crystal-encrusted 3d look is bound to turn heads with its striking volume and detail.

Gareth Pugh is the Dark Prince of avant-garde fashion, and his creative genius extended to the nails at his show, with hole-punched pitch-black talons.

Everyone knows red and pink makes the best colour-clash. Including Moschino, who accented cuticles in clashing shades at their A/W show.

Pink! Leopard print! Rave bracelets! Nothing but good vibes at Jeremy Scott’s catwalk show.

Statement nails – literally – marched down Vivienne Westwood’s catwalk in Paris.

Our latest inspiration comes straight from the catwalk – more specifically, Jeremy Scott’s. We’re loving the golden art over red polish.

Backstage from Riri’s Fenty show, the nails were daring. You might have to be as badass as Rihanna herself to pull these off.

On a more approachable note, the design at Roberta Einer was kept sweet with candy colours and a tie-die effect.

At Christian Siriano’s NYFW show the design was worthy of Channel’s tweeds.

But our favourite trend of the season might be this flower embellished mani – when is ethereal not beautiful?

How gorgeous are these colourful gradients from nail artist extraordinaire Madeline Poole? We’re in love.

Expressing your horoscope love through your mani? Yep, that’s a thing.

Want a simple, monochrome design? Try this ultra cool outline design…

Or these chic ‘squiggle’ nails. How sophisticated!

Who says you need nail polish for nail art? Wire should do it. Check out this cool design by Eun Kyung Park, the founder of Unistella salon. She manipulates the wire into different shapes and keeps the nails neat and tidy with just clear nail polish. Love this!

At the Novis SS17 show at New York Fashion Week, geometric designs were in. Alicia Torello used Louboutin colours to make the nails pop.

We are obsessed with these Kenzo striped nails – we might even have found our Halloween nail look!

Celebrity manicurist Elle used Red Carpet Manicure to get the look – and chose jet black polish Black Stretch Limo to spell out ‘evil’.

These super sharp nails sure are dramatic.

Yikes! This takes the term ‘eye-opening’ to a whole new level, courtesy of the Nail Design Gallery.

It’s all about Negative Space right now. A fully painted nail is just like so last year. This look doesn’t require a base colour, and gives off the illusion of lacquer floating against a naked nail bed.

We love this summery Snoopy and Woodstock nail art from Instagram user @reina_morishita_bezu. To the beach!

Modern Family star Ariel Winter opted for snow white nails for the iHeartRadio Music Awards. We can’t be sure, but we think that’s a gun design on her ring finger.

Whether you’re headed to Glastonbury or hitting the beach this summer, these ice lolly nails will ensure you win the manicure Olympics (that’s a thing, right?).

To get the look you’ll need the Lottie & Walls ASOS Exclusive Twister Nail Polish & Stencils Set, £15, available at www.asos.com.

Start with a coat of the lemon yellow and then apply the nail stickers to section off lolly stripes once dry.

Next, top up with the red or green layers as instructed.
