I Tried Dermaplaning And My Skin Has Never Been So Smooth

The process exfoliates your skin and gets rid of all the peach fuzz on your face, leaving behind super-smooth skin. “The exfoliative benefits of dermaplaning will not only improve the texture and luminescence of the skin, but it will also aid in cell turnover, minimizing the appearance of fine lines,” says Strauss.

“Once skin is liberated of dead cells, the absorption and penetration of anti-aging products is greatly facilitated. ” Plus, it will turn your face into a totally blank canvas, which means makeup will go on much smoother.

As a beauty writer, I get to try some of the best treatments and products on the market, so it’s not often that I call something “life changing. ” But I recently tried the Dermaflash, an at-home dermaplaning device, and I can honestly say that I will never, ever be the same. Dermaplaning, which is usually performed in a dermatologist’s office, is basically a fancy word for shaving off the top layer of skin on your face. You’ve probably seen a handful of celebrities and social media influencers giving the treatment a try on social media.

“Dermaplaning requires the use of a sterile surgical scalpel to gently shave the skin’s surface, removing the top-most layer of dead skin along with fine hair,” says Ilse Strauss, PA-C, of Schweiger Dermatology Group in Smithtown, NY. “It’s my favorite procedure to remove dead skin cells and vellus hair, and when performed by a qualified esthetician, it is a safe and highly effective physical exfoliation procedure. ”

I’ve had the procedure done by an esthetician in the past, and the results – healthier-looking skin – were instant. So, when I heard there was an at-home device called the Dermaflash that would offer the same results, I have to admit that I was skeptical. When do the at-home versions ever work as well as what the pros use? And is really safe to use on your own?

If I’m being totally honest, I ordered the Dermaflash and let it sit untouched in a drawer for over a year. Not only was I positive that it wasn’t going to work, I was also legitimately scared to use it. Even though I’m a big proponent of facial shaving for the sake of smoother skin, I’ve only ever done it with straight razors, and the thought of adding more sophisticated gadgetry to the process freaked me out big time.

But after a year of waiting, and months of keeping my face out of the sun in preparation for the big event, I was ready to give it a try. Thankfully, the directions were crystal-clear, which helped calm my nerves. I started the process by using a makeup removing wipe, then cleansing my face with the tiny tube of cleanser that came with the device. I patted my skin dry and it was time to get started.

Once I turned on the device, I was surprised at how delicate the vibrations seemed. I started on my right cheek, and per the directions, moved the razor in slow, short strokes down the side of my face. I kept it far away from my eyes and nose (those are no-no areas, apparently), but admittedly did move it all the way to my hairline because I wanted to see if it would get rid of my sideburns. It did. I slowly worked my way up to my forehead and down to my chin, using the same short, downward strokes.

After I had finished the right side, I stopped to see if I could feel a difference between the side of my face that had been dermplaned and the one that hadn’t. It was insanely obvious. My skin had never felt so smooth. My left cheek felt like sandpaper in comparison, and I should note that I am obsessive about taking care of my skin, so it tends to be really smooth in general. All of the peach fuzz on my upper lip and cheeks was also completely gone.

I quickly stopped petting myself and moved onto the left side, repeating exactly what I’d done on the first half of my face. When I was done, I was glowing. My forehead wrinkles were also somehow diminished, and there was not a single hair to be found anywhere on my face. IMHO, I looked amazing!

For the next few hours, I couldn’t stop touching my face. My skin was butter-soft. I was tempted to go up to strangers in the street and tell them to touch it, too, so that they could understand how amazing dermaplaning was. I did end up forcing my mom to give it a feel, and even she admitted that it was straight-up sorcery.

So, like I said: My skin care game is completely changed. From now on, the Dermaflash will be a part of my weekly routine… I just can’t believe I waited so long to try it.
