‘Tis the season for bright colors galore, especially as it pertains to makeup. And nowhere are bright hues more popular than on lids – vibrant shadow shades are having a major moment.
“Spring is a time when people are trying new colors outside of their comfort zone,” points out celebrity makeup artist Neil Scibelli.
“Sometimes we just want to wake up our complexion, and bright shadows really add that extra pick-me-up to any makeup look,” he adds. Also nice: They’re surprisingly easy to pull-off. Here, how to rock the three trendiest rainbow-inspired colors of the year.
Pink
More often associated with cheeks and lips, pink can work well on lids, too. “Consider all the different variations of pink,” advises Scibelli. “Sheer, peachy pinks are great for anyone with fair skin, while pinks with orange undertones work beautifully on medium or deep complexions. ”
Our picks: Glossier Lidstar in Slip ($30; glossier. com) and Make Up For Every Artist Color Shadow in Watermelon ($17; sephora. com), respectively. Just avoid using red shades on your cheeks or lips at the same time, which can easily clash with pink tones on your eyes. Instead, Scibelli suggests pairing pink shadow with bronzy cheeks and a sheer or coral lip gloss.
Yellow
Believe it or not, the sunny shade is universally-flattering; Scibelli tells us it’s a great pick for any and all skin tones. Still unsure? Try using a peach or cream shade all-over, then applying a dab of yellow shadow on just the center of your lid for a subtle take on the trend.
Or, swipe it on across your entire lid, but choose a cream formula, like NYX Professional Makeup Vivid Brights Crème Color in Light Show ($10; ulta. com), rather than powder, for a more sheer wash of color. Either way, finish the look with a sleek black cat-eye, which plays off yellow’s fashion-forward, retro feel, notes Scibelli.
Green
“Aqua and emerald greens make for a fun pop of color that’s great for spring and summer,” says Scibelli. Try: MAKE Matte Finish Eyeshadow in Oz, $25; makebeauty. com. And while green looks gorgeous swiped across the entire lid, concentrating the color along the lashline also works especially well. Wet a powder shadow (to intensify the pigment) and swipe it close to the lashline, just like you would with liner, but creating a slightly thicker line.
As with pink shadow, pass on red for cheeks or lips – it will clash with the green – opting instead for a peachy blush and nude lip color, says Scibelli. Gold highlighter dabbed on the inner corners of your eyes and along your brow bone is another perfect complement to green shadow.
