Tinder might not be the most-used dating application on mobile phone when it comes to users, but in terms of popularity, it sure does have the most buzz surrounding it.
The app has completely revolutionized the dating scene, with a focus on swiping profiles left and right to either match (or ‘like’) their profile or toss them away. If you match with another individual after you both swipe right, you can start a conversation and speak to another to find out each other’s interests, personalities, and set up a date or meetup.
It’s pretty interesting stuff, bringing the idea of “dating” into the hyper-fast bustle of the 21st century, and though the app might not be for everyone, users under thirty have gone all-in on the app for their relationships and hookups.
There is another type of swipe on Tinder though – the Super Like, which allows users to send a notification of their like to the match of their choice, gaining the user’s attention immediately without having to open the app and match with each other. Normal users get one Super Like per day, though you can get five free Super Likes per day by upgrading your service to Tinder Plus, a monthly subscription that offers a bunch of upgrades over the traditional Tinder service. You can also buy Super Likes à la carte through the app’s own store interface.
If you’re new to Tinder, Super Likes can seem really confusing or overwhelming. Even trying to find who has or hasn’t Super Liked you may seem confusing if you’re unsure of how the service works. The good news: it’s really easy to use Super Likes. What Are Super Likes?
It’s good to know exactly what Super Likes are when you’re using Tinder, because if you’re new to the platform, it might seem confusing why anyone would want to use a Super Like in the first place. Super Likes were rolled out in 2015 to users, causing a huge stir among the user base already on Tinder at the time. Effectively, instead of using Tinder as a way to meet people who have already matched with you (since you don’t know you have a match until you both swipe right on each other’s profiles) a Super Like allows you to bypass this, sending a notification to the Super Liked-user and giving them reason to view your profile with the knowledge you’ve already liked them.
Super Likes are performed one of two ways. While viewing profiles throughout the app, you typically swipe left or right on a profile to either pass or like a profile, respectively. The third option, a Super Like, is performed by a swipe-up, or by tapping on the star icon at the bottom of the app on both iOS and Android. While the swipe-up gesture is easily enough, it can often cause trouble on certain phones where a swipe-up gesture performs other actions, including opening Control Center on iOS, often leading to accidental Super Likes.
Tinder users tend to see these Super Likes in one of two ways. In one way, sending a Super Like to a user practically guarantees the other user will see your profile, since they’ll receive a notification you’ve Super Liked them. In the eyes of the user who receives the Super Like, it can feel really gratifying knowing that someone liked your profile enough to send you a Super Like, using their one-a-day limit on yourself. Unfortunately, it’s also easy to see Super Likes in a negative light. For one, some users see Super Liking as a needy, overblown way to get someone’s attention. It can come off as unappealing or unattractive, especially if you follow a Super Like with some form of harassment or a bland conversation. Other users might see the Super Like as unnecessarily attention-seeking – if you and the other user have a match, theoretically, they’ll swipe right on your profile anyway.
Still, that doesn’t mean Super Likes are without reason for existing entirely. Though some users might find them unnecessary or unattractive, they’re still used daily by thousands of users to get the attention of possible suitors. How to View Who Super Liked Your Profile
If you’ve received a Super Like and you’re curious who Super Liked your profile, the actions are pretty simple. The easiest method just uses your notifications. Make sure you haven’t disabled notifications within Tinder’s own app, and when you receive a Super Like from another Tinder user, your phone’s notifications will light up with a message alerting you that a Super Like has been received. If you have notifications disabled, it doesn’t mean you’re left out of the Super Like game entirely – it just means you have to work a little harder to see who did or didn’t Super Like you. When you swipe through the app, a user who Super Liked you will typically appear near the top of your stack of people, making it easier to see who has or hasn’t sent you a Super Like. The blue border will still appear around their profile, making it easy to tell who did or didn’t like you. Again, once you swipe right on their profile, you’ll become immediate matches and a conversation will begin. If you swipe left, it’s the same as swiping away anyone else – there’s no repercussions to swiping left on a profile that Super Liked you.
If you’re the one doing the Super Liking, remember to try to be selective. You can’t control how some users will see your Super Likes, and unfortunately, some might be turned off by the very thought of a Super Like. That’s no one’s fault, including your own, so don’t stress too much if a Super Like falls through. Try to be yourself, be open to communication, and be honest – you’ll be surprised how often your matches take to that alone.
Check Your Feed
Back in December 2017, Tinder rolled out a major new feature to a select group of beta testers called Feed, a social network of sorts for those who thrive on Tinder. The feed didn’t reach a wider audience until it rolled out to all Tinder users in March of 2018. The Feed allows you to view updates from all your mutual matches on the service, no matter when you matched with them. Anyone you match with automatically appears in your Feed, with posts including their favorite songs, photo updates, and more.
Once you’ve accepted the Super Like in your cards (as mentioned above), you can dive into the Feed to truly get to know the person that Super Liked you. What you see is controlled by the other person; for example, seeing their recent activity on Spotify depends on them plugging their Spotify account into Tinder. And of course, privacy settings can easily be controlled within the app to change what your matches see in your own personal feed.

I Can’t Find the Person Who Super Liked Me? Did I Do Something Wrong?
Well, to answer the second part of that question first – no, you didn’t do anything wrong. Super Likes do appear around the top of your swiping pile when you’re using the app, and you do get notified when you’ve been Super Liked to begin with. Don’t swipe too fast, or you’ll accidentally swipe past the actual Super Like, and there’s no way to get that back. As far as wondering where the Super Like went if you can’t find it after hours of swiping, that’s an easy mystery to solve.
Because Super Likes are activated by swiping up on the screen, it’s really easy to accidentally Super Like someone. We mentioned above that the gesture for Control Center on iOS is activated by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, leading to lots of accidental swipes as users try to use the shortcut. On some devices, including the iPhone X, on-screen gestures to swipe up from the bottom of the display to go home mean that accidental Super Likes are even more likely. If you’re worried about sending a Super Like when you didn’t mean to, we suggest using the on-screen buttons inside of Tinder in order to avoid communicating the wrong message towards someone.
