From tomato to poppy, these are the best red nail polishes to try

Miranda Priestly knew what she was talking about with the old cerulean barb. “It’s not blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis. ” But, which to choose? Hmmmm. They’re all so different!

I stand by the fact that I own approximately 8 red nail polishes because they’re different shades, people. One’s a flirty scarlet, one has a hint of Orangina, one’s a jam-coloured cerise, one’s straight-up tomato, one’s a deep burgundy, one’s poppy and one verges on berry. Alright, several verge on berry.

The fact is, red’s a classic, especially on your nails. It’s stood the test of time, from 20s flappers, to 40s Jenny Wrens, to 50s Marilyn Monroe, to today where bright fire-engine and sultry merlot are as delicious and versatile as ever.

In fact, red offers you a whole spectrum of opportunities. Sunny days where you’re dining al fresco (albeit on your teensy balcony) calls for a cheery orange-spiked arancia (cracking with a tan). For chilly spells when you’re back in your favourite cosy knit, you might fancy a sultry maroon. For off-duty days a brick red is cool switch from ruby. And for a shade you can’t go wrong with, pillar box red works well on everyone. See? The opportunities are endless.
