Come September, at least if the Fall 2018 New York runways are any indication, makeup will be bold and hair will take on a lived-in texture. From seriously smokey eyes and pretty pops of color to windswept waves, we rounded up the best hair and makeup from the runway.
Fashion is the focus during New York Fashion Week, sure, but the beauty keeps getting better and better.
Backstage, top industry professionals are busy creating new looks and modern takes on old trends (spoiler: hair accessories of the 90s are making a comeback! ) to complement the vibes of each collection.
Chromatic Colors at Naeem Khan
Inspired by a recent trip to Peru, Naeem Khan’s fall collection was a kaleidoscope of color. The clothes were complemented with chromatic eyes and nails. “I’m excited to highlight the ‘chrome’ manicure trend with this new collection from imPRESS, which compliments the collection’s beautiful color palette,” said Mar y Soul, lead manicurist for KISS Products, Inc. “When the models rotate their hands, the chrome picks up the reflections from the meticulously beaded looks. ” The best part: These press-on nails are available at your local drugstore.
After-Dark at Carolina Herrera
It was nothing but love at Carolina Herrera’s show, which was her last one before stepping into an ambassador role. M. A. C makeup artist Diane Kendal created what she describes as a “midnight smoky” eye using navy and platinum shadow. As for the hair, it was swept back into a romantic twisted chignon. “To get the romantic look, it is important not to twist the hair too tight to the head. Keep it loose and don’t worry if some hairs come free,” said Odile Gilbert, a NYFW hairstylist for TRESemmé.
Statement Eyes at Christian Siriano
Celebrating his first ten years in business, Siriano’s Fall 2018 collection meant to convey the glamour and excitement of a royal dinner party while staying true to his belief in luxury for all. Hair was pulled back into sleek low ponytails to highlight the diverse beauty of each model. “My inspiration for the look was Grace Jones’ fearless approach to beauty, which worked perfectly with Christian’s color palette of bold reds, fuchsia and dark tones,” said lead makeup artist Polly Osmond. She painted lids with a fuchsia liquid lipstick (yes, really! ) from the e. l. f. x Christian Siriano collaboration. Lower lash lines were lined with a combination of navy and turquoise shades.
Sporty Chic at Prabal Gurung
Inspired by the matrilineal world of the Mosuo Tribe in China, Prabal Gurung’s collection celebrated female strength. Anthony Turner, hairstylist for Hot Tools and Wella, wanted to create a sporty look that evoked that same confident femininity, so he slipped on accordion headbands (yes, the ones from your teen years! ) before pulling model’s hair into messy buns. Makeup was natural with soft brown smokey eyes and nude lips.
Striking Contrast at Chromat
Another label known for inclusivity, Chromat ditched any notion of conventional beauty with its diverse group of models. M. A. C makeup artist Fatima Thomas swept a marine blue pencil outward and upward with an artful spontaneity to create “dynamic movement. ” To really make a statement, she finished the look with fuchsia and orange lips. Hair was left natural.
Strangely-good strands
The fashion was haute, but the hair stole the show at Jonathan Simkhai. “I was inspired by the idea of a choker but wanted to work it into the hair style for an edgy twist on the look,” said Odile Gilbert, TRESemmé NYFW Stylist. He curled the bottom of strands with a curling iron to give nature texture before separating the curls with his fingers and spraying with TRESemmé Volumizing Dry Shampoo to create more texture. To finish the look, which was paired with no-makeup makeup, he tied a thin piece of plastic around the neck.
Subtle Shimmer at Oscar de la Renta
The intricate embellishments, lush textures, and botanical details were paired with a beauty look that was compared to a “modern British garden. ” Makeup artist Tom Pecheux for M. A. C created a whimsical eye by applying a lavender shadow before layering a glossy liquid lip color and iridescent white glitter on the center of the lids for “subtle sparkle and dimension. ” He finished the look by adding an intentional fallout of glitter on the lower lash line.
Fresh Faced at Calvin Klein
The models on this runway were simply stunning. Makeup artist Pat McGrath perfected their dewy skin, bold brows, tight-lined eyes, and pink lips. Hair was styled with a straight-off-the-street windswept texture.
