Emma’s Madame Web co-stars include Dakota Johnson together with Euphoria’s own Sydney Sweeney, who in March was confirmed to have also joined the Spider-Man spin-off project in an undisclosed role.
The film is directed by British director and writer, S. J. Clarkson, who has previously been at the helm of some episodes of Jessica Jones and The Defenders, both of which were part of a Marvel-Netflix series, as well as directing an episode of Succession and Netflix’s upcoming Anatomy of a Scandal.
While Sweeney’s character is yet to be made known, Dakota’s character, Madame Web, was first introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man in the 1980s, and according to The Hollywood reporter, she is “a clairvoyant mutant who specialises in predicting the future of spider-themed superheroes, having mentored not only Peter Parker’s alter ego, but also multiple generations of heroes calling themselves Spider-Woman. Traditionally depicted as a blind, paralysed old woman, she is surrounded by a web-like machine necessary to keep her alive, meaning that she stays away from direct conflict, and rather sends others on missions. ”
