Emily Ratajkowski has called out Ellen Degeneres after a clip of Ellen asking Taylor Swift about her dating life on her show has resurfaced.
The clip has been merged with a snippet from Taylor’s Apple Music interview in which she explains her experience with slutshaming when she was in her early twenties.
“When I was like 23, people were reducing me to, kind of making slideshows of my dating life, like putting people in there that I sat next to at a party once. Deciding that my songwriting was a trick, like rather than a skill and a craft,” Taylor says in the clip.
“It’s a way to take a woman that’s doing her job, and succeeding at doing her job, and making things, in a way, it’s figuring out how to completely minimise that skill. ”
In the TikTok video, which was made by user @thatnostalgicgirl and which has been viewed over 2. 3 million times, it then cuts to a clip from The Ellen Degeneres Show where Ellen asks Taylor about her “boyfriend” Zac Efron.
“We actually never dated,” Taylor is seen replying, to which Ellen quips back: “Yes you did”. Ellen later asks Taylor which song is about Zac on her new CD. “There’s nothing really about Zac on the CD because we didn’t date,” Taylor replies adamantly.
Ellen then introduces a bell and says she will show Taylor pictures of men, Taylor replies saying she doesn’t think she can do it because it’s the “one shred of dignity I have”. Taylor then (rightly) refuses to ring the bell during the segment, stating: “I don’t want to” adding she might “receive angry emails” if she does.
Ellen begins to ring the bell during each slide of Taylor posing with various male celebrities, and Taylor looks like she’s on the verge of tears when she says “stop it, stop it, stop! It makes me feel so bad about myself every time I come here you put like a different dude up on that screen and it just makes me really question what I stand for as a human being. ”
The video has received nearly 5,000 comments, with one from Emily Ratajkowski that says: “This is so f***ed up. She’s literally begging her to stop. ”
At the beginning of Taylor’s interview with Apple Music, she stated that this kind of thing had happened to her “several times” so there’s no way of knowing whether she meant this incident or not.
“The way everyone is laughing while Taylor’s in tears breaks my heart every time. They don’t hear the cracks in her voice? The multiple refusals? ” one TikTok user commented on the video.
“This gives me early Britney Spears interview vibes,” another added.
Ellen’s show ran for nearly two decades before it ended in 2022, following allegations of a toxic workplace that surfaced in 2020. Viewing figures seen by Variety in October 2020 found that The Ellen Degeneres Show’s audience numbers dropped by 37% in the year from 2019 to 2020.
Ellen was also slammed for her “lacklustre” apology that she gave on the first episode of the 2020 season. “I learned that things happened here that never should’ve happened,” Ellen said at the time. “I take that very seriously and I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected. I know I am in a position of privilege and power and I know with that comes responsibility and I take responsibility for what happens. ”
