Yesterday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced they would be stepping down as ‘senior’ royals in a statement that has sent shockwaves around the world. Cue: an onslaught of hate, a Piers Morgan-fronted campaign to have them stripped of their titles and Twitter drenched in cries of ‘Meghan ruined Harry’, memes poking fun at the couple’s wish to be ‘financially independent’ despite still accepting Royal cash and calls for the £2.4million of taxpayer money on their cottage to be refunded. It’s all been labelled ‘Megxit’ – the tip of the iceberg of a mountain of rage and scorn reserved in most part for the imagined architect of it all, the Yoko Ono to his John Lennon, the Wallis Simpson to his Edward III- Meghan Markle.
But…are we really that surprised?
After all, the backlash against the couple, or, more specifically, Meghan; has amped up incrementally since the wedding bells stopped peeling. Once the honeymoon was over, for this royal couple, it was truly over, and ill-feeling towards them has all but dominated coverage of the pair. Harry called it during the beginning of their relationship, issuing what would sadly prove to be only the first of many statements highlighting the racist treatment of his then-girlfriend; culminating in the pair’s legal action against certain media outlets back in October.
