Would you believe that Katy Perry and Taylor Swift have been feuding for over five years? We can’t either – but it seems like they’re finally ready to bury the hatchet.
Posting to Instagram Stories last night, Taylor Swift showed fans a very literal gift from Katy Perry, in the form of an actual olive branch. She said, “So I just got to my dressing room and found this actual olive branch – this means so much to me.” She captioned the video, “Thank you Katy.”
HOORAY! Naturally, fans were ecstatic.
“I forgive her and I’m sorry for anything I ever did, and I hope the same from her,” she said. “I think it’s time. There are bigger fish to fry, and there are real problems in the world. You know what I’m saying?”
The 32-year-old singer said she hoped she and Taylor Swift could “come together in a place of love and forgiveness and understanding and compassion”.
“I love her, and I want the best for her,” she said. “And I think she’s a fantastic songwriter, and I think that if we, both her and I, can be representatives of strong women that come together despite their differences, I think the whole world is going to go like, ‘Yeah, well we can do this.'”
So how did all this drama begin? The two pop stars have had beef for years after Swift reportedly stole Perry’s backing dancers.
The rumours started when Taylor Swift gave an interview to Rolling Stone, and said (alongside the fact that she hadn’t dated anyone since Harry Styles) that a track named Bad Blood was about a fellow female singer:
“She did something so horrible, I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.’ And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business” Taylor revealed.
But what did she do? Tay Tay continued:
“She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I’m surprisingly non-confrontational – you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.”
Katy Perry reportedly convinced some of Taylor’s backing dancers to leave Swift’s Red tour and join her Prism one.
Then Katy tweeted this:
“Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing…”
Katy’s been very vocal about the feud over the years, especially after the release of Bad Blood, which many speculated was about the pop star.
She spoke to US radio station Sirius XM and admitted that she once tried to reach out to Taylor: “I tried to do the right thing, the good thing, and, you know, she shut me down and wrote a song.”
She also revealed that she would totally answer Taylor’s FaceTime call. “Absolutely,” she said. “By the way, I am ready because I think when women unite, the world is going to heal.”
Entertainment Weekly asked Katy whether she would respond to Swift’s Bad Blood, to which she responded:
“I think [my new album is] a very empowered record. There is no one thing that’s calling out any one person,” she said. “One thing to note is: You can’t mistake kindness for weakness and don’t come for me. Anyone. Anyone. Anyone. Anyone. And that’s not to any one person, and don’t quote me that it is, because it’s not. It’s not about that.”
She continued, “Honestly, when women come together and they decide to unite, this world is going to be a better place. Period. End of story.”
“This record is not about anyone else,” she said. “This record is about me being seen and heard so that I can see and hear everyone else. It’s not even about me! It’s about everything that I see out there that I digest. I think there’s a healing in it for me and vulnerability. If people want to connect and be healed and feel vulnerable and feel empowered and strong, God bless, and here it is.”
However, Katy then released a single ‘Swish Swish’ with Nicki Minaj, which is said to be about her rival…
When speaking to James Corden on Carpool Karaoke, it seemed there was still some anger towards Taylor: “There’s a situation,” Katy said. “Honestly, it’s really like she started it, and it’s time for her to finish it.”
